you can discredit the crazy stuff from the Old Testament if you want by saying that it isn't relevant or that a particular story is just a parable, while at the same time taking verses from it to prove your point. Do you see the trouble I and others have with this?

I do not expect you to fully understand, by the bits a pieces you have heard along the way, which parts are Parables (or stories that illustrate examples) and which parts are relevant or not. If you wish to know for yourself you should read it yourself and continue to ask questions....like your doing here.
If I open the hood to my car I can see that there is an engine in there, but I can not easily understand how it works and why it works. It requires further study.
Ten Years ago my Father and I went to Italy to visit my Grandparents. My Father, having been very succesful in his business, went out and bought my Grandparents a newer TV with a Wireless remote as a gift. When we brought it home we had some trouble with the remote because the batteries that came with it were dead right out of the box. My Grandfather immediately started telling my father what a fool he was, and how the guys at the TV Store saw him as a stupid rich man walking into their store. It simply could not work because there were no wires you see.
I was also informed how sorry he was for Sylvester Stalone. We were watching the news on this TV and Sly was being interviewed. My GrandFather, he was 89 at the time, thought the ear phone sly was recieveing translations on was a hearing aid. My grandfather thought it was such a shame that such a young man like this had the same problems hearing that he had.
Just because you do not understand it does not mean it is incorrect, wrong or some devious plot to trick you. If I am trying to trick you then am I also tricking myself? Why? What do I have to gain by that?
If anything I would prefer to be One bum, sharing with another where to find bread. where you may find it AND were I may find it.
I am enjoying this thread. I hope others are too.
