I've always taken a sassanach to be anyone born south of Hadrians wall whereas Heilanders can also be known as teuchters by us southerners. Are you getting a tad confused kc or am I having a "moment"?:)

Yes and no. Wales is south of Hadrians wall but people born there are not referred to as sassanachs. Not in my book anyway.

As regards north / south division it is just a bit of friendly rivalry and I have even heard the term sassanach used as a derogatory label for us southerners. That must be the worst slur ever.:)
