steam

Nothing like users letting off a little steam but don't you think you think you should be aiming it at Dell & Sandiak? Especially Dell, who just keep selling Sandisk SD cards knowing they'll screw up.
  • I could tell you why the corruption occurs, but that raises more questions than answers - and could get me sued.
  • I could tell you why Dell & Sandisk knew about this in January but said nothing, but that'll make people more angry. And that could get me sued too.
  • I could tell you that formatting a corrupted SD card doesn't solve the problem. You need to low-level reset the card - you can't do that... Sandisk can...
  • I could even tell you that I've got some 14,000 emails from people regarding the SD card subject and I haven't got time to go thru them! I want some sleep.

Some peoples signatures have a list of SD cards they're got. I thought you might like to look at my little list:

12 x Sandisk 128mb SD cards (none work)
4 x Sandisk 256mb SD cards (none work)
6 x Lexar 256mb SD cards (none work)
5 x Lexar 128mb SD cards (2 work)
1 x Simpletech 256mb SD cards (works)
1 x Vmax 128mb SD card (works)
3 x PQI 256 SD cards (none work)
5 x Integal 128mb SD cards (none work)
2 x Integal 256mb SD cards (none work)
1 x Pretec 128mb SD card (works)

I've had more, but I've sent them back to the users / companies that's asked me to test them...

I'm totally knackered going over this issue and hitting a brick wall - so I'm offline'til Sunday...

Anyway, it was my intention give a quick kick in the ass to DELL/Sandisk to fix this problem ASAP as I know they are both monitoring this forum.

And besides the Lexar SD plastic is black while the Sandisk is blue.
LOL

Oh ya....who determines what a "minor ethical infraction" is ?Sounds a little fashist to me.
actually a lot of lexars are blue, just like the simpletechs and sandisks.

and that ethics stuff..man i dont know, i dont even know what you were trying to do by switching the labels between a sandisk and a lexar and then sending dell the good card (??)

I recently emailed SanDisk tech support about my defective SanDisk 256MB SD card.

They said they were aware of the problem, and that as far they knew only the Axims had this problem. They offered to exchange my defective 256mb SD card for a 256mb CF card. I'm waiting for the RMA now, and I'll let you know how it turns out.

Happycheesecake -- could there really be a software fix for this problem? Dell tech support says that they're going to post a fix for the SanDisk problem "this weekend".

Pre-empting Happycheesecake, there are two other instances that I have discovered of similar SD card issues: with the Sharp Zaurus and a Toshiba digital camera, both of which were fixed by upgrades to drivers or firmware respectively. So it bodes well for a software fix from Dell.

A fix this weekend! That would be great! beers and cheers all around!

Has it been determined if this is a hardware or software issue yet?

I just wanted to say thanks to Happycheesecake and the others that pointed me in the direction of SanDisk. They emailed me back and are going to replace the SD card with a CF. It's not the SD that I wanted but at least I didn't waste my money. They were much more helpfull than Dell was!

Keeping my fingers crossed for a fix from Dell so that none of us have this issue again. Thanks again!

I had the same problem with a San Disk and a PNY technologies SD card. When I called Dell tech support offered to replace my Ax saying it could be a "voltage problem". As anyone else heard this?

So-called SD card fix...

From what I've been told by Ipaq 38xx users & others..

Their "SD card fix" was basically a rom update that slowed down the speed that their device wrote to the SD card.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dell didn't do the same... If they did, and you haven't got a problem with SD cards, do you really want to slow your Ax down just in case it might go wrong? Nah, I didn't think so. Yet overclocking has no effect on whether a card goes wrong..

It was strange to discover that my Ax was almost 50% faster writing to a Sandisk 128mb SD card then a friend's Ipaq 3950... Yet with Simpletech, the difference was only about 15% faster.. Overclocking my Ax ups the writing difference speed by the factor I stepped my CPU clock at... (i.e. 400 to 498mhz was 18%-ish faster)

Basically overclocking my Axim makes no difference to whether a SD card corrupts or not... (Sorry Proving_Grounds, my text was a bit misleading so I've edited it..)

As for a "voltage problem", that is possible I guess. If your Ax doesn't supply enough power to the card then you're going to get corruption...

Anyway, quick message to all those people got SD cards that *work* and haven't sent feedback via my website... WHY NOT? I need more details about cards that work. Thanks. Rant over!

(And yes, I know its Saturday! See previous posting...)

Mad SANDisk problem strikes

After nearly two months of working OK, my SANDisk 256MB SD card failed.

I was copying a 40Mb file from my desktop PC over my wireless network to the SD card using file explorer on the Axim. It got about two thirds of the way through, then gave me an "Invald Parameter" message, and all the folders turned into "Dot" files.

The SD card had about 150Mb in use at the time.

It now asks me to reformat the card whenever I insert it :(

I have an Axim X5 400MHz PXA255 ROM A03

The SanDisk details are AR0304LR Tawan

I am looking to buy a few defective and out-of-warranty SD/CF Memory and IO cards to use as display dummies. I will pay somwhere between 1 and 5 dollars each.

Contact me if interested...

Class Action

Very doable! And it will probably end up in a recall for every Dell Axim X5 out there...

I know many good lawyers here in Washington DC. If yuo are interested in persuing a legal solution for the SD card issue with Axim please contact me through: aximSDaction@hotmail.com

Interesting Observation:

Overclocking the Axim seems to increase the chances of damaging the SD card. a 100MHz increase shouldn't do any damage, but anything above that can be very tricky...

This observation brings more evidence that Axim SD's issue might be caused by faulty power feed to the SD drive.
