I'm surprised that you mentioned there are no known issues about this
because there are users on the www.aximsite.com board who are experiencing
the same problem I am having, and some have actually contacted Sandisk about
the issue. Some users have returned the Sandisk card and purchased a
different brand and had no issues.

I have not tried any other Sandisk cards although a coworker of mine has the
Axim and the a 256 mb Sandisk SD and experienced the same problem. The code
on the back of my SD card is 0212LR.

Hmm

Interestingly enough I purchased a new software product for my Axim yesterday and right at the to of the readme file was a warning that basically said...

There are known issues with SD cards on Pocket PC devices as such you shoud always back up you data and applications.

OK so the software vendors know it, we know it so....

Also Just for the heck of it I put in a support log with Dell on it and there solution was

1. Soft Re-set if that doesn't work
2. Hard Re-Set if that doesn't work
3. Try another card
And if it works - You got a bad original card
And if it doesn't work you got a bad Axim

Same issue with IBM Microdrive

I have a 1 GB Ibm Microdrive fully loaded with MP3/WMA music files. I get the same msg that I need to reformat the disc.

Any ideas?

Plus do I need a music player on the AXIM to be able to play
these files on the Microdrive?

What I do when I get the message is eject the SD card and reinsert it. I do not let the Axim reformat the card. It will see the card after I put it back in.

Tried that but that didn;t work for me.

I'm really stressing the card at this moment, few days of appz installing/deleting and stuff copying back and forth. Still going strong :)

I forgot to knock on wood

I had a 3rd SD crash this afternoon, after trying to copy a large file to the SD card. I aborted the transfer because it had started over a few times (the bar under copying from... in the copy & convert window when transferring files had started over a few times, write errors??) and I really needed to go. card corrupted right away.

The best thing is: I can reproduce the problem...

Copy a BIG file with Asynch to the SD card, watch the bar progress.. if it starts over again, cancel it and your card is now corrupted.

Can somebody verify this? and most of all try to do the same with a different brand card (I have a Sandisk CF and SD)

Sorry to be a "Johnny come late" (Yes, my real name is John) on this issue...

Before I moved from the Palm world to PocketPC, many of us avoided SanDisk SD cards because of problems like this.

1) It does not appear to be a new issue as I have been reading about it and avoiding SanDisk on the Palm since about last October.

2) The same support replies from SanDisk were floating around ("we are working on it", etc...) then.

3) It does not seem to be a problem isolated to the Dell Axim.

4) My solution was to simply not buy SanDisk SD cards. This worked for me as I have never had anymore of such problems.

I buy Lexar, PNY, etc...

Hope this helps someone.

BTW: I am not anti-SanDisk. I think they are a very innovative company providing many cost effective solutions. I just don't buy SD cards for my PPC or Palm devices from them. I do, however, purchase other products from them without hesitation!

Poll

Hey, I started a poll on this whole Sandisk SD card issue, it is under "Axim Hot Deals", "Hardware", look for "Poll: Axim Sandisk Card". I want to get an idea as to the extent of the problems. I have had one for about a month, had some initial problems, formatted the card, and have had no problems since.

It will run for 30 days, let me know what you think.

Is this only with the SD card? I have a different brand and haven't had any trouble. I just bought a Sandisc CF card (512) and now I'm worried. I haven't got it yet. I plan to use it just for music and other multimedia and use the SD for applications. I do have a card reader I can use for transferring the files.

Has there been an issue with the CF format??

I have not heard of any issue with SanDisk CF cards. Perhaps someone else has more knowlege in this area...

I buy the cheapest CF cards I can find (sometimes this is SanDisk). I only avoid SanDisk SD cards...

OK I bought a SimpleTech and a Lexmar SD card over the weekend and moved multi-meg files in and out of both, so far no problem.
The other thing I noticed when I had the SanDisk card in and just before it crapped out my apps started running really slow. So far with the 2 new cards no change in performance, but as they sa "film at 11"

Are the crashing problems with synching to SD card during a 'drag and drop copy using explore' or by putting files into 'Axim My Documents' and letting Active Sync do it? ...I haven't got my SD card yet, but I prefer to copy over files manually via 'explore'. Does this method also result in the problems mentioned here, there, and everywhere?

Cool Possible Sandisk SD Fix?

Hey...don't know if this will work for the long term, but I think I found a way to fix the reset problem for the SD cards in the Dells...

Anyhow, I ran into the same problem repeatedly that I see posted here and on other sites. After trying to load multiple programs to the SD, something happens, and the whole disk erases and fills with directories labeled "..".

I read somewhere that this happens because the metal label on the Sandisk shorts out when it is inside a "tight" fitting (is there any other type?!?).

So, I covered the metal label with one layer of regular, everyday non-conductive Scotch Tape. Did it 2 weeks ago and haven't had the problem since, on my Ax or my wife's!

So, whaddaya think? Am I sitting on a time bomb? :')
