Wow.. I was expecting much worse..
I'n not saying this isn't a shi**y thing to do anyway, but....
I think people are probably over-reacting a little, just because puppies are cute and furry, and make people feel all fuzzy.
For example, if this guy was using live squid for bait, I don't think anyone would give it a second look, let alone get all worked up about it.
Also, if you actually think about it, this guy is *also* trying to put a harpoon through a shark, and leave it in the sun on the deck of his ship to slowly drown over the span of several hours. Why isn't anyone worked up about that?

I don't understand this also: how can a *dog* be innocent? How can any sort of animal be innocent? You think the sharks he was trying to kill aren't innocent? You think they have done sometime to make them deserve getting the treatment i mentioned above?
Meh, just my view. I's a crummy thing to do in any case, but I don't think it's worth getting worked up over. In some parts of the world things happen that are *much* worse, to human beings. I think that is probably more worthy of your anger/sympathy.
We humans have a contract with certain other species which have helped us throughout the years. Dogs and cats are foremost among them, being associated with us for thousands of years. Dogs helped early hunters hunt. Cats exterminated the rodents and other pests that plagued grain stores, enabling us to farm productively. We owe our society today in part to their participation. So, I think we owe them humane treatment, it's part of our contract with them.
I signed a contract with a dog???? I musta been really really drunk.

I must admit, I didn't check Snopes first, but the story was collaborated by The Sun. Also, Snopes does not declare it a fake, just a possible fake: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp
Also, you are right, I do care much more about dogs than squid. I shouldn't, but I do. Maybe it is because there are two dogs in my family that all the members of my family absolutly love.
Lastly, I agree the treatment we give our fellow man is sometimes even more appalling. In addition to the detainee mentioned, there is t e brutal beating of a 64 year-old retired school teacher, or the malicious acts of BTK.
I'm sorry to have posted such a depressing post. The world really looks awful if all we focus on is the negative.

Reason: grammer
In China (and other Far East countries) dogs and cats are eaten regularly. They view no animal with no more 'respect' than any other... only for their usable value.
from an ethical perspective (and I hate ethics) a poor wittle puppy has no more right to life than does a squid or Tuna or the cow that sacrificed itself to become Double, Quarter Pounder with cheese and the leather uppers on my Reeboks.
The picture is (potentially) fake, and politically incorrect, and socially unacceptable in western culture... but get a grip.

from Snopes
Rather than describing hordes of shark fisherman impaling live dogs on hooks and dragging them behind boats as shark bait, the article notes that employing dogs in shark-fishing is largely the province of a small group of amateur fisherman rather than large numbers of professionals, that the dogs used are generally dead animals picked up from roadsides or culled from the island's large population of unwanted strays (estimated at 150,000), and that the no-longer-alive animals are attached to unattended buoyed "shark trap" platforms rather than dragged alive behind boats.
I bet Austriallia wouldn't mind doing the same thing with rabbits if it was economically feasible to do so ( and the PETA crowd would leave them alone)

This doesn't surprise me at all. If it weren't illegal and much more closely scrutinized, there are "people" that would also do this with other people. Basically there is NO limit to the disgusting behavior of "humans", and we somehow arrogantly call ourselves superior to other life on earth. Even if this story is "fake", it still accurately illustrates mans total disregard for other species and the environment. I'd call the vast majority of humans pigs, but I don't want to insult any pigs.

If we can constantly do stuff like that to animals aren't we superior? I mean if we weren't superior then we couldn't constantly tie dogs to a line and go fishing.
So you totally disregard other species and the environment? that is a disgusting behavior you have there. oh wait your not in the majority are you? so you have compasion for animals and the environment, wow so that makes you morally superior or something? oh wait now your the superior one(that can't be your human) OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone superior to use human pigs AWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WATCH OUT HE'S GONNA TIE US TO A LINE AND GO FISHING AWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry don't know what happened there. lol yeah I'd say pretty much all humans are pigs, it's just that some show it and some don't. but deep down inside we'd all like to smack a dog, or kick a cat once and a while, I know i've wanted too. and so have all of you(at least once), i'm just the first to admit it(although I haven't purposely kicked or smacked any animals) I did step on a dog one time, I felt really bad too cause that dog(tammy) was really cool.

Well I for one don't mind that much if/when folks get outraged over something like this. Far better than the usual alternatives (indifference and/or worse). But anyway, how about we wish at least a part of all this ill will on the moronic trash who used that pic to make the fake story.
