Since this is a general chit/chat forum, I hope you don't blame me for this stupid question.
I watched the movie 'American Psycho' a few days ago and it was totally mind-blowing. I really can't pick one best scene because the movie was full of great scenes.
Anyway, I heard the song 'hip to be square' in that movie and I'm wondering what that really means. Would you help me on this? my curiosity is begining to torture me :)
If the meaning varies depeding on the context, it would be really great if you tell me as many meanings as possible.

AP2 isn't anything like as good, and isn't really a sequel as it has few continuing plot elements. AP is a good movie and a good laugh - oh yeah, the song means it's cool ("hip") to be uncool ("square").
Oh god, that expression sounds ironic but I guess that's the beauty of that expression. It's cool to be uncool :)
I haven't seen the sequel to AP. Most of sequels, especially 'unofficial' sequels directed by different director, suck. The only sequel that came to my mind better than the previous one is Terminator2. There should be more...
P.S)I almost killed myself to watched the movie The whole ten-yard, which was the sequel to The whole nine-yard.
It's hip to be square!!!! YYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! REBEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
personally i don't think it's hip to be square, I think it's hip to be yourself, because being square to be hip is being like other people who are being square to be hip. your conforming to a group so that you don't have to conform to a group that is hip now,
just be yourself and you'll be hip, and not square
circle circle circle

Be true. Don't be ashamed to be just who you are. If you are trying too hard to be cool, you simply are trying to hard to be something untrue, and that's just not cool. So, regardless if Hollywood thinks you're cool, it's cool (hip) to be you (square).
I don't get it... are you asking what does the expression mean? Don't you, yankees, talk like this anymore? :D
any way - remember Austin Powers, the scene where Dr.Evil meets his son, singing and dancing "I'm cool, I'm hip..."

Haha, I'm NOT an American citizen(actually only 2years since I've been here in the states) and I don't know if they still talk like this or if it's sort of an old-fashioned expression. No matter what the case is, I like this 'hip to be squre' expression a lot. Thank you for the useful link to Urban dictionary website. It was so funny and I laughed till my jaw hurt.
