Is that legal? I mean they may own the copy rights to the media but when you buy a CD you also buy the licence to the intellectual property on that CD who do the execs at Sony think they are, changing registry keys just for playing a CD!! Also hiding it seems very shady to me.

In fairness, since the linked articles are pretty old, Sony has agreed to suspend production of CDs with rootkits on them.
This has been goin' on for awhile, why would Sony have
done so in the first place?
Leave a bad taste for Sony products in my craw.
Protect your "stuff" Sony but, this, un-moral for sure! :realmad:
Protecting property, physical or intellectual, is ok. Forcing
someone to eat your "stuff", unthinkable! :realmad:
Oh, don't get me wrong, I completely agree. I also think Microsoft should find a way to run their desktop operating system such that every Tom, Dick, and Harry, erm, excuse, every Ha-chan, Mi-chan :D doesn't get access to system files and configurations. Microsoft is slowly closing up the gaps in their system, but it doesn't help that Sony can "make" new ones so effortlessly....

i read somewhere that the House committee on science and technology, as well as the commerce committee may be holding hearings on this. talking to the republican canidate running for congress in the Georgia 12th companies like sony need to understand it might be there intellectual property but it is our computers.
well - that is why i have stopped buying Sony's since 2000!!! (except for the Clie, that is - w/c i then regretted when i got the VZ90)
ever since Idei-san took over helm - things turned for the worst... well, at least now that Sony has a new chairman, maybe things would turn out for the better... but i doubt that it would happen in the near future...

if mac made up 80-90 percent of the desktop market it would. i guess using the mainstream OS has advantages (most software development is geared towards windows) and disadvantages (probably 100% of all malware development is directed at windows.)
Yep - notice that it cannot install itself though. It explicitly requires the user to enter administrator credentials to allow it to install. It's an extra level of defense. I THINK the same functionality is coming into Vista(??)
