Need Ideas to Manage Content on Website

Heya!

I just got a new domain that I plan to put to good use soon enough. It's going to have a lot of content in lots of different categories. Some already exists, others will be copied over.

The question is.. what is the best way to manage this content? I know the obvious answer is a Content Management System, but which one? I don't need anything TOO fancy. Definitely something free, and easy to install. My domain handles PHP and MySQL, but I don't know them that well.

Also, are CMS's really good for just one person? I don't plan to have anyone else really update to this site. I really just want something that I can add a variety of content too, and have the site update accordingly.

Thank you so much!

Have you tried Six Apart's Movable Type? I use it for my blog and it is very easy to use but has a ton of features. There are also a lot of third party plug-ins available for it. It easily categorizes information- I have mine divided into 22 different categories presently and the list is still growing. Go to Movabletype.org for more information- it is free, but of course you have to install it on the server. Give it a shot, and yes, a CMS works great for one person.

Schrags and I tryed Mambo, now called Joomla as a content management system on my website, but neither of us cared for it.

Were using Wordpress now, We just implemented it today and it seems to be working well. I've got wordpress for people to post comments, and just sliced images for my actual content, with tables to make additions quick and easy.

So you may want to check out Mambo/Joomla. It's slightly more work to learn, but it's rather beautiful and very robust.

Wordpress is easy, and you can get by fine on it if you just want a simple blog, I do beleive it is classified as a CMS though. It's all I need.

I tried a couple, namely; MovableType, Mambo, PHPNuke, Blogger, Yahoo360!. I prefer and settled with Mambo. It was much easier to install. I installed it on a remotely hosted linux server and can manage all the content and settings through web access to the server. I have never had a problem with it. It does have many templates out there and lots of instruction on making your own. I have not made a template because I have not spent the time to learn how and am not so artsy. If you are hosting a Linux server, I recommend it, you just unzip the package, upload to a specific directory and then login as admin to set up and add content. Very flexible. I have done some searching for different CMSs in the past but have not found one as easy to install or administrate.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Wow, a lot of people seem to recommend Joomla/Mambo.

I actually installed both that AND drupal> Drupal definitely seems like a more simplified version. Joomla seemed like a lot of stuff at once. Is there a way to simplify features in Joomla?

Forky, I'm kind of with you on thinking Joomla is a lot at once, but it doesn't seem too bad once you get into it. I just set up Joomla on my site on the 14th and have customized a bit of it. I was at least able to take some of the unneeded menu items out so clean it up a bit. I also added a banner to Aximsite into the rotation.

Check out my basic tweaking. Obviously there will be more to come, but for this being only day 3, I'm okay with where I'm at....ummm I CAN count. Day 4!

Inertial:

I am in the same boat as you. I've been playing around with these things for WHILE :).

I think I'm actually going to with wordpress, it seems more suited for an individual needs, and it has plugins. Of course, this could all change come next week :)
