This is coded into the virus, it's sending out emails inconspicuously without the infected user's knowledge. It's basically turned their machine into a big spam factory. Also, do you know of the name of the virus that's attached to the messages? If you do, google it, and you will find a description of how the virus works.

I use a program called Mail Washer Pro. Before I download any e-mails I check it first in Mail Washer and then if I don't know who it is from I delete it and then block any further messages from them, but the neatest option is that you can bounce the e-mail back to them as if your e-mail address never existed. Another option is my ISP uses a program called Postini as a part of their server software and it catches 99.9% of all e-mails with viruses attached.

get avg antivirus software and set it to check each mail as it is downloaded. that will prevent you from opening a piece if mail that is infected.
it is tops rated and free for home use.
tracing the emails is kind of fruitless, after lots of trouble.
