It might be interesting to hear your thoughts on how old you think your children should be before you buy them things like cell phones, Ipods, etc. Times have really changed for most of us who have been around for many years. The electronic age has changed our habits. There are some arguments, however, on just how early we should allow our children to become engrossed in these items. Let's hear your thoughts on this. Also from some of you younger ones in the group. How early did you get your first gadget? How does it affect your life?
Following is a short article on some things to consider before buying your 6 year old an Ipod. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/product...-gadgets_x.htm
Had my son playing on an Apple II when he was around 2 years old. Got him a pager when he was 6 or 7 (so we could get ahold of him when he disappeared with his neighbor friend). About the same time got him a Nintendo (talk about recurring costs!). Started hand-me-downing my old pc's to him when he was around 10. Got him a cell phone when he started driving. He's been spoiled but he can also hold his own with others when it comes to computers and gadgets. I guess it's never to early to expose kids to technology as long as they understand the intended uses and you don't let them abuse the priviledge.
My 3 and 4 year olds share a computer for educational games. It's somewhat amusing that they have figured out how to put the CD ROM in, start their games, and play it, but my father has trouble double-clicking!
I pretty much spoiled my 4 yrs old son with techno-gadget...

I think a lot of it has to do with the maturity level of the kid. We've had a hand-me-down pc for the kids since they were 2 or 3, but my 11-year-old does not have anything portable (except for a Game Boy).
Some of the elementary schools in my school district are requiring students to purchase a configured iBook via the discrict for both in- and out-of-class instruction and homework. Some of the schools are using this for 3rd graders. Go figure.

Rachel has been using my handheld toys since she was 5 or 6. Jacob started a little sooner. It's a hands off policy with the other kids because they don't respect other people's belongings and they would trash my PPCs. As for computer...well, I think we got Rachel going on that when she was 2 or 3 - Jacob, too.
Jacob has been asking me when he is going to get a cell phone (he's 8). I told him when he has a job to pay for it :D
I have no problem with exposing my kids to technology. All of the boys just got MP3 players but we don't allow them out of the house with them. They also do not put their own music on them.
They've had a Playstation and Nintendo for years now so that's not a biggie. We tried the Gameboy thing, but my middle son likes to take things apart and the battery cover is gone as are some of the accessories. We won't be doing that again for a while.
I say it is good to expose the kids to electronics. This is where the future is. I don't think there is a specific age that it is acceptable. It just depends on the children involved and their level of responsibility.

hehe... You can thank rsaturn9 for this work of art. It was either this or bring Dobby back out (and he's been at IpaqHQ all year so he is pretty tired).
i was very little when my dad gave me some old laptop. all it had was a little word processor but i loved that thing. (and i still have it and it still runs too, weighs a ton though i dont see how i was able to carry it when i was that little) and then when my parents got a second computer for me and my brother i was always playing with it. i think its good to let your kids use and understand computers. ive noticed with my adopted 9 year old sister that she doesnt really know much about our computer, and i think thats because she didnt grow up with electronics. (and we adopted her when she was 7) about a year ago i tought my grandmother how to use the computer for going on the internet and it took about a day before she learned how to double click.
kids take in everything and (in my opinion) learn very fast. i think the younger the better, its their education theyll need to know it
I'm 14 and in the 9th grade. My first gadget was the original playstation, which me and my two other brother's saved money to buy, then the playstation 2 that me and one if brother's saved to buy. Now I have a prepaid cell phone (Nokia 3595 on T-Monile), a Creative Zen Micro, and my x30. I've almost always had to save my own money or share the cost of things with my brothers to get games and stuff we wanted. I think it's perfectly fine for a child to be exposed to electronics at a young age, as long as parents don't go overboard on buying things or later they won't understand the true costs of things and may become spoiled. At least in my opinion.
You guys are amazing!! Little kids with cell phones and mp3 players?! Incredible! I have some serious doubts about that sort of thing. Children just have simple difficulties with attaching value and worth to an object like that. The electronic devices I own (including my Axim) were all bought an paid for with my money. That's ALWAYS what my parents drilled into me. You can have it once you pay for it. I'm sure that most of you noticed how expensive these gadgets can be as soon as you got a job so that you could start buying them. Is there ANYBODY here who knows what I'm talking about? Just handing an iPod to a little kid doesn't give him the slightest CLUE about what kind of work goes into such an item. Perhaps I'm wrong, let's see what everybody else has to say.
Matt
