These are genuine 'reasons' quoted by the RSPCA as to why people no longer want their pets. What utter pillocks, the lot of 'em.
Reasons, gimme a break! That just shows how self centered and egotistical the "owners" are. That's the kind of "people" who should not be allowed to have pets!

I can't believe the throwaway attitudes people have about pets! It makes me so angry - I lose all respect for anyone I hear sharing that opinion. All my friends and family feel the same. And when I meet Mr. Right, he better dang well like lots of kids, pets and gadgets running crazy around the house! ;)

We're considering a dog at the moment. I can't agree more with the whole "pets are not for xmas" thing. It seems like it's a phenomenal amount of work! We're reading books on puppy school, dog psychology and researching breeders at the moment.
Not something we'd consider rushing into and still not something we're 100% sure we'll do unless we're absolutely certain that we can fit the dog into our lifestyles for the next 15-20 years.
Find a breed rescue for your breed of choice. Talk with them about the breed's traits, major reasons why people turn in that breed, things unique to the breed, etc. They can be quite helpful in determining if the breed you like is really a breed for you.
My "pet peeve" is pet owners who have no concept of how to train or treat their pet. So many times the pet ends up being alpha and then subsequently developing behaviour problems as a result. You can be alpha and still love your pet.
Me? I love Dobermanns (in case anyone could not guess!). My avatar is my boy's picture. He is a highly trained working dobermann - not your usual doberman (single n vs double nn).

My pet philosophy is to realize that they're all like toddlers... sometimes they're going to be messy, whiny, destructive pains in the rump but you still love them
How right you are! This thread resurfaced kinda timely for me. I came home for lunch today and found my 14 year old cat, Tinker, dead. For the last several month's she'd throw up on the carpet 3 or 4 times a month and dad did the dutiful clean-up thing. That's just what you do for a member of the family! She was an exceptionally personable cat. The house will be a little cleaner now but whole lot emptier!

Sorry for your loss. That's the down side to owning a pet - they never live long enough for my liking.

Animal cruelty is an all too sad issue. My wife has been known to deliver nasty letters to pet owners in the naighborhood, late at night pretending she is the ASPCA. People that tie their dogs in the back yard all day with no shade or shelter. And the people actually get mad. There are too many people who are just plain stupid.

As bad as those reasons are, do some quick searching on puppy mills. It is disgusting how people treat animals, and if you don't understand all the commotion, read up on some stories about people in New Orleans who wouldn't leave their homes because rescue people wouldn't help save the family pet.
If you don't have a pet, you may not understand the love between pet and owner. If you do have a pet and still don't understand the love ... you have no idea what you're missing and how much love your pet has to give.
