These are genuine 'reasons' quoted by the RSPCA as to why people no longer want their pets. What utter pillocks, the lot of 'em.
- My cat doesn't match my new carpet;
- My dog doesn't match the new sofa;
- I thought chinchillas only lived for two years, I don't want a pet that lives for 20;
- I've got a new puppy that is too boisterous for our old dog. Can you take the old dog away?
- Our kitten isn't playful enough with our children;
- We don't want our three rabbits because they don't come out to greet us;
- I've got two elderly terriers and I don't want them to get the new carpet dirty;
- I'm going on holiday;
- My dog keeps hiding my shoes;
- Our cats sleep on the stairs. I don't want my daughter to trip over them when she comes to stay;
- She hurts my legs when she wags her tail;
- My dog barks a lot;
- We just bought a new leather sofa and I don't want the cat to scratch it;
- Our dog gets jealous when we sit together.

Animal cruelty and abuse are so common these days. It has gotten a lot of media attention also. I know the Animal Channel runs a show called Animal/Pet Police or something like that. Of course everytime I see it on, it is featuring Detroit Michigan, where I am from. :realmad:
Animal cruelty though comes in many forms. A lot of it comes from potentially "good" pet owners that don't know how to take care of their pet. A good example is people who wish to start a Saltwater Aquarium. These are very complex eco-systems that takes some knowledge to maintain. Too often knuckle heads jump into Mini Reef Aquaria and do not set it up correctly and hence, all of their livestock/fish die. They didn't mean for it to die, but their ignorance killed them none the less.
I hope all would be pet owners would put the proper time into learning about their pet prior to going out and getting it. It would make for much healthier and happier pets.
Then there are people like my wife who call me every other day w/news of a new animal. We now have a dog, several fish, a couple turtles, and a guinea pig. Then she put us down to adopt estranged pets from Katrina. What if the Katrina pets don't match our carpet?

My wife and I are members of a Pomeranian rescue group.We have two of our own and one that we are fostering waiting for a home.I find it very hard to believe how people can abuse or throw away these beautiful little dogs.You can tell alot about a person by how they treat their pets.
Honestly, I think there should be a moratorium on not allowing pet stores to sell from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day
way too many pets are given on the spur of the moment during the holidays to children who aren't capable of dealing with them by parents who don't think beyond Christmas day.
Our two kitties were abandoned a week before Christmas 4 years ago when we took them in (yesterday was their 4 year "Cativersary" according to my son )
When my son was around 9 or 10 he just HAD to have a pygmy african hedgehog for Christmas so I caved.... what a useless pet! Sonic was a noisy, nocturnal ill tempered little pincushion of a creature but I still cared for him for almost five years.
[/my two cents]
As part of our Christmas gift to each other, my hubby and I adopted a shelter dog last year (we had of course done considerable talking to determine that we were ready for this). Merlot is an Australian shepherd and quite possibly the most loved and spoiled dog in the world. Hubby and I can't imagine life without her. We don't have 2-legged kids by choice, but our 4-legged child is the best!
Animal cruelty and abuse are so common these days.
Animal cruelty doesn't exist on my watch.
My babies are well taken care of.
If I see animal cruelty, I'm first to speak up, in very easy to understand terms! :)
I :love: my Schnauzers! And, all animals!
My Boy Tank! Tankie Boy! :)

That allot like my pup except the cat does not like her for some reason. The cat is 15 years old thou and he had a dog before the new Pup.

That's one nice looking dog Tankman.
We've got our youngest daughters 2 young(ish)cats staying with us over christmas, they just love clawing our year old carpet and stressing out our 10 year old Westie/chinese crested cross... Bless 'em.

My pet philosophy is to realize that they're all like toddlers... sometimes they're going to be messy, whiny, destructive pains in the rump but you still love them
