A totally unrelated PPC problem

Okay guys I have a problem totally unrelated to Pocket PC's but since I have been coming to Aximsite for quite a while I hope the moderators will see their way clear to let this one through for the purposes of getting my problem solved.

Now - I have an eMac and a standard ASUS desktop PC. I also have a Lexmarx X1170 printer, scanner, copier. What I want to do is connect my Lexmark to both computers via some sort of hub and USB cable setup. Problem for me is I don't quite know what hardware I need.

Has anyone out there - preferably in Australia - got any ideas as to what I could do...?

First of all are there mac drivers for this printer? Don't know if you have these computers networked but would think if you networked them you could print though the network.

After a quick Google search on "share" and "USB", here are two possibilites here and here. I don't have any more experience sharing USB devices unless you hook them up to one machine and then share them via a network.

You might also look into a USB print server. The printer becomes a node on your home network.

Before you start any of this, you need to verify with Lexmark that the printer can be shared. Many of the all-in-ones want direct one-to-one connection with a host pc because of the faxing capabilities.

Good luck! :approve:

crawil - the second option looks very promising and may infact be perfect. I have the software for the printer loaded onto both computers and it works fine with both computers but I would rather have a switching device that would negate the need to be pulling the cable constantly and swapping between both computers. I don't do any faxing so would that nullify the issue of one to one connection?

Uggghhh! - tech support. Asking them a question would be like screaming in a vacuum - deafening silence.
