i recently downloaded ubuntu linux live cd... after some trouble i got it to run on a dell optiplex GXA... i have been experimenting with it for about an hour now and i have got to say that it is far superior to windows... i hve a really crappy video card in the optiplex yet ubuntu makes it look like a high end one... so just wanted to let you guys know about how ubuntu runs..

Be careful... You say it's better than Windows but you have only used it for an hour!! Go and read that a little, you might find it interesting.

It is indeed "different" from Windows, with his pluses and minuses, but you can't tell after only an hour!!

Im glad you like it though, the more user Linux has, the better the scene will be, and the more help we'll be able to get!

You probably haven't explored all the hardware specific issues either. I looked at a couple of Linux distros but the thought of spending 9 hours to get my Wifi card working put me off.

Certainly fun to play around with though.

Do you have an external hard drive? I wonder if it's possible to do it from there? Or an over the network install?

After only an hour it's a bit hard to gauge Linux as far superior, but it's defititely gotten much better over the years!

That depends. Suse 10 is a great OS if you like RPM. I hated RPM's and therefore prefer a Debian based os for APT.

Linux is about choice and the freedom to make that choice... it's not about petty OS pissing matches. :approve:

Linux is very specialized many times, or it is for certain things, not really fair to just say HEY THIS ONE IS BETTER THAN THAT ONE.

But anyhow, linux is a pain to get things working on many times and thats why Windows is successful mainstream. But if you put the time into it, linux can do anything, as it really is totally open to your imagination (if you have the time to mess with it).

Everything has its place, I feel there is really no need for bashing at all as they are all meant for different things :)

thats what i was thinking all of my computers are networked so it might be possible... the thing that i was worring about is what happens if the installation closes communication with the sever.. will the installation just hang?
BTW: the computer doesnt have a usb port so a external drive wont be possable...

Assuming your notebook has a PCMCIA slot. You can get one with CF card reader and place it on the CF card. You might want to try DSL (Damn Small Linux) it only takes up 50MB.
I tried Ubuntu and it took forever to load up

Yeah but that PCMCIA slot is a pain in the ____ to get working under linux. I think youll have to live with it, since you seem to have a "not-so-recent" lappy. If you want to save space, just install one GUI and choose your packages well.
