STATESBORO, Ga. — Police cordoned off part of downtown Monday in this small southeast Georgia college town after a man was taken hostage in a building about a block from City Hall.
More than five hours after the incident occurred, police were still trying to negotiate with at least one suspect.
The building where the incident was taking place apparently includes a law office. A woman who answered the phone Monday at the office of Zettler Hostilo & Register LLP said the office was closed and hung up.
City spokeswoman Maggie Fitzgerald would say only that a man was being held hostage.
Police would not say how many people were involved in the standoff, nor would they confirm reports that the man being held hostage was a lawyer and that the suspect or suspects may be armed.
Repeated calls to the Statesboro Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation were not returned.
Statesboro, home to Georgia Southern University, is 225 miles southeast of Atlanta.
