A to Z of Aximsite
Aximsite is a wonderful place and full of all sorts of information. There are, however, lots of words, names and jargon that are used which you might not know about. This thread is not about how to sync outlook with a Wm5 device. It may tell you what a sync and Wm5 are, so you can ask the question in a more appropriate thread.

Anyway lets start at the very beginning (that's a very good place to start)

A01, A02, A03 etc 1) The Rom version of your Axim, not to be confused with the hardware revision
2) The Hardware revision of your Axim, not to be confused with the Rom version For reasons known only to Dell The Rom revision use the same numbering scheme. See Rom Revision and Hardware version

ABF Acronym for the member Aximbigfan OR How the spelling challenged learned the alphabet A B F G C P Q....

Activesync- the software that connects your axim (or other pocket pc) to a windows computer. It will also synchronize (sync) your calendar, contacts etc. with Microsoft Outlook (not outlook express). Have a look at this tutorial for more info

Afarre: Aximsite's very own Dr. Frankenstein (or Dr. Moreau???)

Avatar - That nice little picture of you that either reveals yourself to the world, or projects an image of someone else.

Axim - kingdom in Ghana that we all know and love. We are all keen followers of the country and use these forums to discuss it. Unfortunately a small computer company called Dell made a range of Pocket PC devices with the same name so these also get mentioned here from time to time

Backup.... So, you've spent time setting up your pda with all your software, filled it with every contact you've ever known and and your Nobel prize winning novel. The next morning some bit of software crashes and destroys everything. That's when you're so happy you have a backup.

BAQOTD - see Basil Brush

Basil Brush - Britain's most famous comedy fox made his entrance here in early 2005. Since then he has run a quote of the day competition assisted by his imaginary sidekick Psionandy

Battery – The source of many controversial threads on aximsite. Have a look at Frenchy's Tutorial for more info

BIS- see Memory

Bluetooth – 3 cheers for Ted (whitelyt who has written an excellent tutorial. )

Britney Processor - If you don't know what this is, then I'm sure Paris Hilton will tell you

Bump - Whenever you reply to a thread it gets bumped up to the top of that forum, and also in the most recent list. bumping your own thread repeatedly is considered bad manners. And of course there is one thread that shouldn't be bumped (you know you want to..... )

BT - 1) See Bluetooth
-2) Sometimes used to refer to British Telecom
3) Ask your dentist

CAB file Have a look at this tutorial... it was written for the x5 series but still works.

Cardreader a small device that plugs into your computer and saves you so much time when transferring video or mp3 files (or any other type of file for that matter

Cases - The Quest for the perfect case (TM) is an adventure that all PDA owners embark on once they have their new baby in their hands. Shock proof? Scratch proof? Drop proof? waterproof? Bullet-proof? And still slim enough so it doesn't spoil the fit of your jacket pocket.... Hard to find, but if you wanted a simple life you'd still be using pen and paper

CF see Compact Flash

Chris - aka the Comish or Mr Leckless. Founder of Aximsite, builder of forums, owner of servers. Without Chris we just wouldn't be here.

Chocolate Hobnob- Probably the finest biscuit in the world... seriously!

Compact flash – Comes in either Type I or Type II. And Cheaper than SD. The only difference is that type II are thicker. Microdrives are only available in Type II.

Community – Thats us. A friendly community that look out for each other.

Contributors- Servers and bandwidth don't come cheap, advertising pays for a lot of it, but if you want to help out (and get a nifty contributors tag) click on the link at the bottom of the page. Or if you can't find the link, PM Chris (see Chris )

Definition - Lots of terms on aximsite need definitions.. see here

Dell -1) noun a small valley or hollow, usually wooded.
-2) aka Del Trotter CEO of Trotters independent trading, sellers of quality. Probably the worlds famous Dell Boy in the world
-3) Some small startup computer company that also sells PDAs

Devilishly Clever People- Can be found in the waterfountain... or just about anywhere on aximsite.

Digestive Biscuit - Prior to the invention of the Chocolate Hobnob the Chocolate digesive was the Biscuit of choice....

EFEFEF: colour code to make quotes trully invisible.

Ebook- read books on your axim... And we have a forum just for that

Emulator- as well as just running pocket PC software your Axim can run, with varying degrees of success, software for other platforms by using an emulator. Emulators exist for PalmOS, Gameboy, playstation, Atari, Dos and many others.

F7F7F7: colour code to make posts truly invisible.

Faximbigman - See ABF

Flat Battery -= Hard Reset unless you have WM5 apparently

Frenchy - the one with the monkey and will post pictures of other stuff... And if there's ever anything we can do.. just ask and consider it done

Football A game played by kicking a round ball. Anyone who disagrees with this is clearly wrong.

FSM2 - aka Flying Super Monkey Man... secret superhero Identity of... well if I told you it wouldn't really be a secret identity FSM2 stands for Truth, Justice and the Canadian way

FU - FairUse Wizard... a great way of converting DVDs so that you can play them back with TCPMP

Gigi - the sweetest Mod.. and they are a very sweet bunch.

Gps, - Really amazing use for a Pocket PC. Jake knows more about GPS than I will ever know, So have a look at his GPS 101 tutorial

Gprs – A way of sending data over the mobile phone network. In the UK it's expensive, and a lot slower than wifi... but let's you get connected anywhere.

Gsm The main mobile phone network in the civilized world... parts of America use some other system

Hard Reset- Puts your axim back to factory defaults and deletes all software and data not stored on Flash memory or BIS

Hardware revision - A number that tells Dell which version of sticky tape holds the Axim together. Or something like that. Nobody knows what the difference is between an A01 and an A10 Axim, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

House of NJ - The NJ's are a much loved source of fun, entertainment and giggles on aximsite.. And include (in order of joining) Larry, Lauren, Annamaria and Julian.. It's only a matter of time before their parrot joins

HTC – Company that seems to make nearly all of the Pocket PCs in the world (although other manufacturers do exist). Other companies, like Dell, then rebadge, resell and support them

Invisible Text- If you can read this then you know about it. If you can't see it then all you need to do is read this definition for a full description

Ipaq, like an axim but not as good There really isn't anything near a perfect PDA. So if you are looking for one than an Ipaq is worth looking at as well.

IpaqHQ – Aximsite's little sister, now going through a teenage phase and calling herself Ms Mobilitysite . Worth popping over for a more Ipaqish perspective. And you may see some familiar faces over there too.

Jokes - how low can you go?

Kiwi- see Mrklaatu

Leckmedia Addiction - I don't have a problem my self.. but spot the warning signs by looking here

Legends - Individuals with far too much time on their hands. Some are still active members, others are only seen as they pass through the shadows.

Lurkers – Strangely enough some people just read this stuff and never post... If that's you then come on in and join the party

MaximFigBan - see ABF

Memory- for 2003/2002 devices Stoneraven9 has written an excellent guide which can be found here. For wm5 people... it's a lot simpler. It's either in main mem, or on a flash card (or hidden in the rom where you can't get to it)

Microdrive- tiny hard drives that fit in your compact flash slot. Avoid Oem ones as they may not work.

Mobilitysite - The new name for IpaqHQ, Now with extra Mobility and 15% extra site

Moderators - really helpful and wonderful people who make sure that we follow the rules and tidy up around the place. A bit like the Wombles really

Mrk- see Mrklaatu

Mrklaatu-aka Mrk (no spaces no period) aka Aximsite kiwifruit... (if we list all his aliases we may be here some time ) An Aximsite legend, now ascended to Valhalla (on his longboat) . If you never saw his unique picture posting style you can only guess at what you missed

Mypda – Lots of members have filled in their MyPDA section. Go on a Mypda treasure hunt and see what you can find

Newbie – Everybody has to be a newbie once..but don't let that stop you... we like newbies and would never give them any advice like this

Netfront - The 'other' browswer... and now the new owners of Palm

OklahomaMama - A chick with brains.... who loves to Bump

Opera - A great browser for those who don't like PIE

Other PDAs -Don't have an Axim. we don't care. Come on in anyway

Peppermint Stylus - A much asked for feature for any new PDA

Perfect PDA - A mythical device that doesn't exist. Until it does you'll always have to trade features against each other. Size vs. Cost vs. Memory vs. USB host vs. VGA out etc... So one ideal PDA will be different from another's

Postcount - A number that doesn't mean anything at all...

Psionandy - Mostly Harmless

QVGA - 320x240 resolution, a PPC standard before VGA

Rankings - A if you really believe that postcounts do mean something, then this will tell you exactly how much time you wasted trying to increase your postcount

RHC-NET - Caffine addicted Hob Nob eater.

RSaturn9 - Ingenious Avatar maker and the Best Lawnmower aximsite has ever had (He ROCKS!)

RTFM - 1 )(Read the #@5!?*% manual)
- 2 ) Excuse me my dear chap, I believe the solution to your problem may be more easily obtained if you could trouble yourself to read the associated documentaition that was so thoughtfully supplied with the device that you purchased

Rom version - Rather than issuing patches one by one, Dell waits until it has a collection and then issues a new version of the Rom. Including all the patches and tweaks that they have thought up. Updating to the latest rom is usually a good thing, although it does involve wiping your Axim completely. At which point you have to install everything again.

Screen Protector - How much did that Axim cost you? How much would a new screen cost? You DO need a screen protector, and get a nice one that will last for years, rather than the cheap ones that will last for days. You can tell the difference.

Staff Members - People who are hard(?) at work behind the scene making sure aximsite is a happy place. They include Administrators, Moderators, News Editors, Reviewers, and Hamster herders. They do all this for the love of the job, and seek no rewards (apart from the free beer and Magic Flight rings)

Stevenator65 - A Big fan of Basil and other Herbs

Sticky Some post that are thought to be useful are made sticky and go to the top of the forum list. Thanks to the kind Mod who decided that this was sticky material

Stupid Questions - Some say there are no such thing as stupid questions, others disagree. In any case if you have a question then feel free to ask it. Although you may want to try the search button first.

TCPMP (ex BetaPlayer) the best movie player for the axim. No doubt about it... not even a little bit... try it, go on, you'll love it

TheFang Everyone's favorite Wolf in Wolf's clothing...

Unit Zero A Lexicographers dream entry who hides behind Shadowy AVs

Vario II My current PDA, which complements my Axim

wdement - Co-queen of the last post

What Can I do with my Axim? - A very good question... and here's a very good answer

W.I.P - A self-professed "work-in-progress".A known binge poster he prefers to keep posting in a thread until all other members retreat to the real world thereby leaving W.I.P. free to stalk other members in other threads. The only known habitats of the W.I.P. are certain regions of the water fountain and your closet. may suffer from Lechmedia-enduced delusions. thrives on Kool Wip.

World Cup - The Worlds biggest and best sporting competition (and yes the USA is in it)

YodaEXE - You can always use him for Y

Zebras - Not using PDAs at the moment... but you never know
