I can handle any insinuated homophobia, any defense of cultural norms. I can understand this point of view.

That is a cantankerous comment. This thread is going down in flames and should be closed.

Sure! At least I wear it in school. Wearing it at home with mother and wearing a uniform outside home... that's not MY way. And I dont need guns to make up for some other shortcomings ... What's your problem with people being different?

I have absolutely no problem with people being different. It's only when they throw it in peoples faces and stir up trouble that bothers me. I firmly believe that people can do what they want and live their lives as they see fit, but there is really no need to advertise their difference. Please understand that this is only my opinion and we all have one.

But it seems to me that you are both advocating advertising conformity.

Don't we all conform to something in the end? Even our "nonconformists" seem to fit into a mold, partially if not completely. Modern societies, to be perfectly honest, don't like those who don't fit in and will find some way to make them conform, even if it is by making the nonconforming behavior into a "modern trend." Those who are completely "different" are few and far between, and are, generally, made to feel left out on purpose...differences scare people. Societies permit some nonconformism, but not a whole lot.

On the whole, the mass media has the effect of promoting dysfunction by giving it mainstream credibility. Indeed, it will frequently imply, and sometimes tell us, that dysfunctional people and families are normal, with the subtext that it isn't too bad if we emulate them. Later, any dysfunctional behaviour we exhibit may be reported, creating an unbroken feedback loop....

Such frames of reference are called 'schemata' (singular 'schema') by cognitive psychology. These are powerful organising mental fields or 'maps' that govern how each person will fill in the remaining detail to supplement incoming information. They also determine whether it is taken on board, or whether the eyes of your interlocutor glaze over as they gaze horizontally into the distance.
Below is just one of many articles on the internet that discuss the pressures on nonconformists. I didn't find any on the nonconformists within this group...there are probably too many of us <VBG>.
"As mental biases, determined by incoming sensory data and information, schemata become increasingly marked over time, leading people to seek out certain kinds of subject matter while ignoring others. The selective nature of information taken on board then tends to reinforce existing schemata. This feedback cycle represents a kind of hardening similar to the way that people typically develop increasingly rigid attitudes as they get older. "

Oh, and for the record, I really am uninterested and unconcerned regarding the attire of others as it's not about me.

AMEN, Brother! It's the nonconformists who moved into the unsettled lands in the 1800's. Don't know how much luck they would have attempting to work with NASA today.

Well, I don't know how "unsettled" those lands were, but they were certainly less populated than they are today. ;)
