UPS Driver Attacked By Middle School Students

Quote:
(CBS) BELLWOOD A UPS driver was savagely beaten by middle school students while delivering packages in the western suburbs.

The attack happened in Bellwood along the 3200 block of St. Charles.

UPS driver Thomas Murphy says he was beaten by a group of school kids on busy St. Charles Road in Bellwood, the route he has driven for 12 years.

He says a teenager walked out in front of his delivery truck Friday at about 3 p.m. When he stopped the truck, 15 to 20 youths surrounded him.

"Somebody clocked me with a pipe. I took kicks from my right. My eyes caked over. I tried to get up and defend myself as best I could," Murphy said.

He was beaten from his head to his ankles.

Are these kids:
Misunderstood.

lashing out against corporate America because of a lack of quality after school activities and/or free cable TV

lacking adult supervision

going to get really hurt if they stop the wrong person.

I tell you what...

If I EVER find out my daughter (she's only 8 right now) were to be involved in something like this - I'll personally kick her a$$. There's absolutely no excuse for crap like this. (And I would consider the jail time worth it to know that she was properly disciplined.)

One word - Thugs.

This reminds me about a story that involved a prophet, a group of kids, and a bear.

I think the parents of each youth should recieve the same or harsher punishment as their children. Many people respond to fear rather than ethics. Maybe the fear of punishment will help them control their children.

Police say an anonymous witness has come forward with the names of several people involved in the attack. Murphy identified a couple of people in a photo lineup Monday afternoon, but no one's been arrested yet.

I thought this happened on a school day.

Why were a "pack" of children not observed by either school officials, parents, law enforcement officials or someone (anyone) who could have at the very least notified police that a group of children were unsupervised in the area.

I have a twelve who may not like the fact that his mother or a designated authority figure (teachers/principle...) or I supervise his every move from sun up to sun down.

Let me clarify: For a little while in the afternoon, he is a "latchkey kid", but his mother picks him up from school and drops him off at home. I arrive shortly after that. So yes there is a little time that I suppose he could go beserk, get in trouble and possibly cause harm. However I am confident that he won't, because we got our vaules instilled in him early.

Call it fear, respect, responsibility or whatever, the point is that my son knows what consequences he will have to face if he chooses poorly.

(And I don't think he wants to "cash that check".)

and watch if the parents reaction to this get out, it'll be someone else's fault. not themselves or the child involved.

In my neighborhood, school gets out at 2:30, so we have kids all over from then until about 3:00-3:30 when they manage to finally get home. It would probablly not occur to anyone to call the police about a "pack" of children (actually teens) unless there had been previous trouble and there was no indication of that in the story.

Of course, this all pivots on the 100% accuracy of the media and total inclusion of all facts in the story! :rolling:
