The one thing that they do not point out here is that it would be very easy to convert this technology to use alternative fuels like Ethanol... since the engines horsepower isn't directly related to driving performance, a lower octane fuel could be used were it available and modification to the gas engine and programming and such.
The point being that it wouldn't need Gasoline at all. In the short term, ethanol is easier to distribute, since existing facilities (7-eleven) can deliver it to the consumer market without retooling for Hydrogen gas, etc.
Oil will always (still) be consumed for some things, plastics manufacturing, rubber, commercial vehicle fuel, Military, etc.
Five years ago hybrid cars were an unknown commodity. Today vehicles powered by a combination of gasoline and electricity are all the rage. Like any new technology, until you get your hands on it -- in this case, on the steering wheel -- it's hard to get your mind around it.
If you are having a tough time separating hybrid truth from reality, you're not alone. The warp-speed adoption of hybrids into popular culture -- and into hundreds of thousands of American driveways -- has produced more than a little confusion and misinformation. Most industry analysts predict the continued growth of gas-electric vehicles, with estimates ranging from 600,000 to 1,000,000 hybrid sales in the U.S. by 2010, so this is a good time to debunk the 10 most prevalent myths about hybrid cars.

That is ok... I'd rather have it in my tank, than in my belly.
Besides, we can use corn... the corn that we used to send to Africa that would just rot in warehouses on the docks

That is a touchy subject as North American likes their big vehicle. More SUV are use here than enywhere else in the world. If Hybrid do not meet certain NA demand they will not sell. I have a neighbor that use a Hummer just to go grocery shopping :bang: She doesn't see the problem and doesn't care about polution (6Mi/Gal) She thinks that it will fix itself in time.:shurg: Sometime some people just need to be shaken.

Well, I agree with the fact that we need to get out of the oil business sometime. We have to look harder for alternative fuels. It's a huge challenge, but necessary.

Arrgh - The "not my problem" attitude is frustrating. I drive an economy (Saturn) car, if Hybrid's were available and more affordable 5 years ago I would have gone that way instead. I don't think we all need to be total watchdogs but yeesh
Quite frankly sometimes you need a BIG car... I have 4 kids and usually one or 2 of their friends at any given time. So I fill up a 7 passenger minivan a few times per week.
If there was a hybrid minivan that did get 40+ mph, I'd buy it, but they aren't available/affordable yet.
My Wife's office just moved and so we can no longer car pool... The van was traded in (Last night) for a new Chevy HHR http://www.chevrolet.com/hhr/ and now when we have to take all the kids, we will have to use 2 cars. My car is a Ford Taurus BTW
Sometimes the BIG car is necessary, sometimes not, but the need is there for some.

the problem with Ethanol is that we would see vast plantations of sugar canes (continuing) to wipe out the natural forests and habitats
Note that, in the last 100 years, millions of acres of farmland have been returned to wild, because American farmers have gotten so good at using land, they were overpoducing with the excess land. Also, keep in mind that ethanol from agriculture is a "net zero carbon dioxide" source of energy, meaning that your crops filter CO2 from the atmosphere to use, and we convert that into the ethanol, which burns cleanly, releasing only CO2 and H2O.
The other big issue is the energy savings. Most hybrids when it is all said and done use more energy to build and construct their special batteries, special light weight frames and additional engine parts then they save. Electric cars especially like the Prius may save you in gas but you don’t take into account the electricity it took to power the car. The true future is finding the right balance of fuel savings and engine optimization. It is very cool living in Oklahoma and driving out to Weatherford, ok and seeing the huge windmills. Wind power is very cool. I just wish it was more efficient.

You miss the point. It isn't the total quantity of energy that goes into the production, it is the type of energy used... Fuel oil is a premium now and is only likely to get worse. Ethanol is effecively a limitless resource... once they combine Hybrids with alternative fuels, the dependancy on foreign oil will dramatically reduce.

4. People buy hybrids only to save money on gas.
Hybrid cars top the list of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. Going farther on a gallon of gas -- and thus reducing a car owner's tab at the pumps -- is a logical advantage of a hybrid car. But car shoppers seldom buy based purely on a logical economic equation. Besides, as critics of hybrid technology frequently point out, those savings seldom add up to the extra cost of buying a hybrid over a comparable conventional vehicle.
So, if it's not to save money, why are more and more shoppers going hybrid? Many reasons: To minimize their impact on the environment, to help reduce the world's addiction to oil, and to earn technology bragging rights. Who was the first on your block to have a color TV? Who will be the first to drive a hybrid?

Believe it or not, you may already own a car that can run on a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline (E85). http://www.e85fuel.com/index.php
Now, one of the advantages of a hybrid car is that you can save on gasoline on short trips. For instance, for just driving to/from school/work, you'll only use the batteries, which you recharge at home every night. But for a long trip, the gasoline is used. And in a traffic jam, the engine will only turn on when needed, improving the mileage.
BTW, ethanol (C2H5OH) is mostly made from corn. IIRC, in New Mexico, there is a "corn maze" of which its corn is mostly harvested for fuel.

As mentioned in the State of the Union address, Switch grass can be used to produce ethanol... perhaps even easier and cheaper than can corn
