now that bites... I wonder if the same applies to dvd media

Can anyone summarize it? I don't have (or want) RM installed.
The reporter just says that burned CDs will not last like more than 5 years than CDs available from stores (the stamped CDs), because of the recorded one not having a protective layer.
I still wonder how many use CDs for archiving. I now use hard drives for archiving, and so do many others I know. After all, with a lot of CDs, it can take a lot of time to find the right one. I even thought about an automatic CD changer, until I noticed how cheap hard drives are in comparison.
Out of thought, I probably have some CDs that I burned over 5 years ago. I'll still see if they're readable.

Yeah... I have CDs from the time 2x burners was $200... >_<
That has to be more than a few years ago.
Oh and I hate real... Apparently NOD32 agrees and doesnt let me install the real one even if I wanted to... get some virus warning and deletes it hahaa
CDs life can be longer, but it can be very short as well...all depends on the quality of CD you bought.
Many do not know it, but there are grades of CDs and that is why some are so much more expensive. Even being brand loyal does not always work as some of the known brands like HP have been known to use cheaper media.
I personally just don't use CDs for long term storage so I am good. I have some burnt OS cds that i use quite a bit for field work (so the orginals do not get lost/ruined) and they have lasted over 4 years now.
CDs can last a long time...just its not the best long term storage
I just bought a 250 gig hd to store all my cds and dvd rips on for 100 bucks. Cds are good for travel but you end up with so many and with a hd I can acess them all at once no cd changer required and over a wireless lan also.
I have store bought pc cds from pre win 95 days and they work, but they are stamped. I dont have any cd-rs over 5years. havent owned a burner that long.
