You may want a second USB sync cable - very useful for USB drive mode.
Then there are some nice, free applications, like Portable Firefox and Portable OpenOffice, that work great on any USB drive.
Then there's mencoder for encoding videos.
There's also a USB host cable that can be used to transfer photos from a digital camera.
Also consider a TV card for your PC so you can record and then watch TV. The iPod cannot play native MPEG from TV (probably takes up too much space anyways), so use mencoder to reencode it to a supported format. Also use something like VirtualDub to cut out commercials and unwanted segments.

Drag and drop them back in. And use iTunes to edit them next time ;) Or repeat the process. iTunes uses the ID3 data to build a database when the tracks are imported.

wow, that is amazing. This is very popular software and it can't even refresh the library?!?!? Winamp found em all right away. If I drag and drop em all won't I have 2 copies of each song?
I've never had to do it. Arguably I could blame YOU for doing it through winamp as opposed to doing it through iTunes :) But I guess if it was important to enough people it would be in there.
Whether it duplicates your songs or not depends on how your library is setup.

Why couldn't they just make adding and removing files from an iPod as simple as using the file manager? They reinvented the wheel there, and they did not do such a good job. Apple, you need to consider the users who have used file managers for many years. And remember, it's possible to manupulate directories using a custom program.

*sigh* because they based it on a database format, not a flat file format. Arguably it provides a level of security through obfuscation.
It's simpler than using a file manager. I don't have to care what my directory structure looks like. I dump my music into iTunes in any directory structure and iTunes will sort it out for me and clean it up. Simple. Is it My Music\itunes\itunes library\moby\play\bodyrock or is it My Music\itunes\itunes library\dance\mody\bodyrock? Why should I care?
I'm not saying that it's better. It's just a different system. Once you understand that it's different maybe you'll appreciate it more.

Don't mean to jack your thread, but... I have been thinking about getting the Creative Zen Vision:M or possibily an Ipod Video. From what I have found out, the Creative would be a better choice--better screen, longer battery life, plays more formats, and has the ability to play and record FM radio. I would also use it to play videos, maybe some full movies. The majority of my music collection is in WMA format, which the Ipod doesn't play. The only disadvantage I can think of with the Creative is it is a bit thicker. I want it to be pocketable.
