Exclamation Looking for an mp3 player

ok guys, I am looking for a good Hard Drive based mp3 player that I can use in my car thru a casette adaptor.

I currently have a cd player in my car, but now I have Cd's everywhere, and the tape deck (believe it or not) is alot nicer.

Anyway, I don't want an iPod if I can help it (I refuse to use install iTunes on my PC)
I may be able to use it with winamp (that would rawk) so let me know.

I want one that it is very easy to make playlists on (they will be my virtual CD's)

I want one in the 20-30gb range, and as cheap as possible.

Since I will be using this while driving, a nice bright, easy to use screen is a major plus.

Thanx, I look forward to your suggestions.

PS: I am trading a laptop in the classifieds if someone wants to trade for a nice mp3 player you can PM me.

A few things.......Do you have a radio? If you do you can use a fm radio transmitter this way its wireless. Why not use itunes? I love it its much better then Windows media player and any other player. You can always look on ebay for a old gen 3 ipod thats 20 gb for around 50 bucks, or if you also want video wait untill feb 28th and maybe the new full screen video ipod will come out and some new ipods POSSIBLE.
Hope it helps,
Justin

I believe you can use an iPod with WinAmp. I cannot think of a single reason to do so apart from cutting off your nose to spite your face and not using iTunes.

Is it that you just don't like the idea of having iTunes on your PC? Or is there a legitimate reason? Not asking to be an ass, but iPod and iTunes are tied together quite well so chances are if you're a card carrying member of the "iTunes sucks but I don't know why" club then you can quite safely rule out the iPod too.

Creative have the Zen Vision: M but it's actually more expensive.

iRiver's H10 20GB is $299. Sure it's 10GB less than Apple's iPod, but it would meet your target of avoiding Apple products and that's important to some people :)

Try the Zen Sleek Photo -- 19 hours battery, 20 GB.

There is no screen better than an Axim with 8GB microdrive. ;)

I personally do not use iTunes -- Winamp 5 Classic with RemoteAmp serves me well.

Try a ipaq hx4700 and you'll never say that again

the hx4700 is too big for me :p, but then, only the hx4700 is considered "big" goodness.

Now to search for an hx4700 on display in the city. The only VGA one I've ever seen is the Toshiba e830.

Once you've held it you'll know how good it is.
And it's not that much bigger

Try an iAudio. They're packed with features and some have as much as 35 hours of battery life.

well, I think I have settled on the 5th gen video iPod black (30 GB) now, I need to sell that lappy to rally the funds.

Howard, I would use winamp cuz it's what I use for all my music, and I shouldn't need another app when Winamp will do the job.

There are legitmate reasons not to use Itunes. while i wasnt able to completely prove it, my java compiler got screwed up about the time i installed quicktime/itunes. So i spent the better part of a day trying to find the problem in my program that wasnt there, and ended up doing poorly on that project and had to drop the class. thanks alot apple.

By the way the H10 20 GB was $169 last week on woot.com and it currently $189 at ecost.com.

I stay away from itunes because I like the subscription model and you can only do that with other mp3 players.

I bought an iAudio x5l, and i've been nothing but pleased. Quite thick (huge battery), but still pocketable has line-in, voice recording, video playback (pretty mediocre), usb host, up to 60gb and incrdible sound quality!! I've used an ipod and there is no comparison really. The bad:it uses a file tree, personally i prefer these, and there are rumors next firmware update this will be fixed. Also it's DRM support is so-so, but there and easy to use once set up i've heard. I use it with etymotic er-6s, i like the sound cancelling and quality sound. Any questions feel free to pm me!!!

You'd also lose the smart playlists right?
