Its a matter of trust. You could send your ebay buyer an email and tell them to send you money through PayPal and avoid the charges, simply use different email addresses. If you were sending some stranger money and they suggested something like this would you trust them. If somebody is going through that much trouble to use a service and beat them out of $6.00 are you going to send them $200? I do a good deal of business with ebay and I use paypal. It provides a good service. It limits my exposure to the buyer/seller and gives me somebody to look to when things don't go right.

Both Ebay and Paypal have a few very idiotic policies and customer service for Ebay is at best average and with Paypal is non-existent. As an example, I owed Ebay $7 in seller's fees and tried to pay them with Paypal. I have well over $150 in my Paypal account in cash, but had removed my bank account and credit card because of a previous screwup by Paypal. Paypal won't let me pay the $7 without providing a credit card again. Looks like Ebay is gonna get stiffed for the $7 to me. Do a Google search and you will find numerous horror stories about Paypal. They are NOT subject to the same rules as a bank and, therefore, set their own rules as they go.

To get my balance from Paypal, I have to give them a bank account for an electronic transfer, or they will charge me $1.50 to send me a check. They also have strict limits about how much of your Paypal account you can withdraw. They are very unpleasant to deal with. I have no problem with rules that make sense for fraud protection, but they go way beyond that. One of the ways they make money is interest on your money they hold.

I agree. I don't particularly like fees of any type, but accepting PayPay payments via credit cards increases the likelyhood of that whatever-it-is-that-has-been-sitting-in-a-box-in-the-back-of-my-closet-for-far-too-long selling on ebay.

(except of course the listing fees, final sales fees, ebay normal would charge). And how do you actually get the payments out of paypal. Do they deposit the money into your checking account or send you a check you can cash??
You will see some ebay auctions that say something like "accept paypal but not credit cards through paypal". You can put money into your paypal acount with direct withdrawal from a bank account. If you pay direct from you paypal account, I don't think the seller gets charged the 3%.

You can get the money out several ways. You can buy something and pay from your paypal account. Or, you can request paypal to send you a check. Or, you can get a paypal debit card.

I agree, I like their service.
