How does PayPal make money?
How does ebay make money with regular users since they do not charge a fee from buyers or sellers??? or even to withdraw money? Or am I dreaming??
I currently dont use paypal because I am boycotting ebay since they destroyed half.com after they bought it out.
But I may have to rethink that strategy since I began selling on Yahoo and its a pain waiting for the check in the mail!!

paypal takes a fee from the recipient. eBay charges the seller.
Boycott them both if possible!!!

I suspect, and I have no facts to back this up, that they make something off of the interest on any money left in any PayPal account. Again, I can't quote anything, but with all of the accounts that have a few dollars in them on any given day, that's really got to add up!

Can you elaborate on this because there really no other online service that I can see besides paypal? Also, how does ebay charge the seller when they use paypal? On paypal's site under fees it states free to receive or send money.

Yes it is free to send and receive money on a personal account. I believe that if you wish to receive payment from online auctions you have to upgrade your account. I can't remember what the call the upgraded account but they definately charge you a fee for receiving the money.

I recently sold a Palm T3 on Ebay. With shipping, the auction ended at $208.67. Ebay charged me $6.37 for the auction. This price varies with initial listing price, options like pictures or bold print and ending price.
Paypal (an ebay company) charged me $6.17 for the transaction. This price varies depending on price and funding source such as credit cards. The paypal fees may be zero if you transfer money from your paypal account to another paypal account. But they will charge you for credit card transactions, atm fees... Always read the fine print.
Not complaining, I'm still ahead compared to leaving the Palm in my desk.

Actually, Ebay takes 5% per ending price, and fees, and shipping, and a business account on paypal takes 3%. So sometimes, I do an auction, and end up with 15-20% off original price buyer pays. That's why I love aximsite, I Can get it for only 3% off original price.

I have no problem w/the ebay or paypal fees. They perform a valuable service for me and they deserve to earn money for it. In fact, I have sold stuff for significantly more on Ebay than I would've here, so the extra fees I paid were more than offset by the realized gain.

As much as I hate paying the fees for either, I will continue to use them both until something better comes along. Let's face it, a lot of sellers only accept Paypal now. I will only pay by Paypal. Sure, I miss out on some auctions but for the most part I do all right.

As seller, you have the choice whether to accept paypal payments by credit card or not.

What if you sell on ebay and don't use credit cards for paypal payments, then can I assume you dont have to pay the 3% charge? (except of course the listing fees, final sales fees, ebay normal would charge). And how do you actually get the payments out of paypal. Do they deposit the money into your checking account or send you a check you can cash??
|
All this documented on the eBay and PayPal sites.
But PayPal will usually hold the cash in your PayPal account until you say how to dispense it. A transfer to your account is common. I think they will cut a check (never done that), but would expect that there would be a fee for that.
