I think it is worth mentioning here that NPR states that the "Louisiana Attorney General has been investigating allegations of mercy killings". "Investigating allegations", in a land where you're innocent until proven guilty by the media, is a bit of a stretch to "they did it".

Without playing devil's advocate, we don't know what, exactly, the circumstances were there, (save that they were not pleasant) let alone what truly happened. That's why we have a legal system to investigate.
Personally, if I were in painful end stage cancer as some of these folks were, had signed a DNR order indicating I didn't want heroic measures taken to prolong my life, and it appeared I might be forced to die alone, in the dark, in a swampy flooded hospital with the medical staff not knowing when, if ever, help might arrive, I might consider a lethal dose of painkillers to be merciful, swift, painless, humane and dignified.
But, again, since investigations are ongoing, we can't judge what really happened, only speculate.
