Hospital Gave Lethal Injections to Patients During Hurricane Katrina

if this really happened, heads will roll... I'd hate to think this would have actually happened, but I've seen enough disaster movies to believe that people are capable of anything

I have no idea about the reliability of this source, so...

NEW ORLEANS, February 22, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Just after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans rumors circulated that at least one hospital had euthanized patients during the mayhem. LifeSiteNews.com reported in September 2005, that an unnamed doctor admitted to a UK newspaper that such activities had taken place at Memorial Medical Center (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/sep/05091205.html ). In October another doctor at the hospital confirmed in a CNN interview that he suspected such activities and admitted he left the hospital saying he would rather abandon patients than actively kill them. (see coverage: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/oct/05101303.html ) Later in October hospital workers were subpoenaed for an investigation (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/oct/05102806.html ).

National Public Radio now reports on its access to court documents in the case. In a February 16 report, NPR says it has reviewed secret court documents related to the investigation and not yet released to the public. The documents, says NPR "reveal chilling details about events at Memorial hospital in the chaotic days following the storm, including hospital administrators who saw a doctor filling syringes with painkillers and heard plans to give patients lethal doses. The witnesses also heard staff discussing the agonizing decision to end patients' lives."

I agree. There is no excuse. This is where the right to death movement is taking us. "Life is only as valuable as I say it is.", sarcasm intended.

No doubt they will claim that they were trying to spare patients needless suffering and some nambie pambie jury will say they (the perps) suffered enough because of their having agonized over the decision.

I say, if the accusation is proven true, that they be punished as attempted murderers.

I doubt that any of us has even the slightest idea what went on down there during Katrina and the weeks following. From what I've been hearing it was positively Medieval in that region - though that's not entirely different than the way it was BEFORE the storm. I've had folks that I know from there who described a pretty lousy place even as it was before the storm.

I think it is worth mentioning here that NPR states that the "Louisiana Attorney General has been investigating allegations of mercy killings". "Investigating allegations", in a land where you're innocent until proven guilty by the media, is a bit of a stretch to "they did it".

Without playing devil's advocate, we don't know what, exactly, the circumstances were there, (save that they were not pleasant) let alone what truly happened. That's why we have a legal system to investigate.

Personally, if I were in painful end stage cancer as some of these folks were, had signed a DNR order indicating I didn't want heroic measures taken to prolong my life, and it appeared I might be forced to die alone, in the dark, in a swampy flooded hospital with the medical staff not knowing when, if ever, help might arrive, I might consider a lethal dose of painkillers to be merciful, swift, painless, humane and dignified.

But, again, since investigations are ongoing, we can't judge what really happened, only speculate.
