Question USB and PDAs... Not What You Think

One thing that I have always wondered is why no PDA on the market has a USB port built into it. I would think that this could be used to replace sync cables, allow for the attachment of USB devices (mice, keyboards, lights, fans, memory, etc...). Is there something I am missing about the overhead of a USB port that would prevent it from being built into a PDA?

Just curious.

probably that you could use a universal USB cable and not have to buy their special sync cables....plus, the sync port can do other things (like serial connections and such) that a normal USB port could not

Nothing prevents it, if you are willing to pay for it you can get it now with the RECON which has a USB and a serial port built in.

many of the newer ones have mini usb for sync and charge, like blackberries.

As for external devices, the simplest reason that I can think of is power requirements of powering the external devices, and/or powering the port itself

I have wondered the same thing. With bluetooth, IR and wifi I can copy directly, but to use usb I have to have activesync? Thanks to somebody on this website I have found the Lexan makes an usb jumpdisk that uses SD cards.

As I said it is done by the TDS Recon, as per their specifications: "Standard 9-pin male D-shell RS-232 serial and USB ports" Go here for more information but be warned that they are not cheap.

I had an i-mate Jam which has the mini USB and it didn't seem any different when syncing, exploring, charging etc. Grentz is probably right its more to do with protecting profits on proprietory accessories than anything else. A USB port would meand that adding external devices could, in theory, be a much less complex matter.

Hmm

The PDA is really a strange bizarre device. I believe it's really falling behind b/c low level laptops are only $500 now whereas a PDA is around $300-$500 for one. That is definitely not a good sign. PDAs of today *SHOULD* take advantage of USB connections with a higher battery pack. Also, PDAs are held back with USB 1.1 support and not USB 2.0 support, at least some of the models. It's kinda sad, but PDAs don't impress me as much as they used to. I mean, I still use mine for a lot of things, but it doesn't thrill me that much.

If ppc's had usb, people wouldnt have to go out and get ir/bt keyboards/mice. I would just hook up any keyboard and any mouse to my ppc. I could even hook up my usb flash drive. That would be cool for taking data around, instead of carrying a card reader.
