New paint blocks out cell phone signals
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 1 (UPI) -- A Rochester, N.Y., company has developed paint that can switch between blocking cell phone signals and allowing them through.
"You could use this in a concert hall, allowing cell phones to work before the concert and during breaks, but shutting them down during the performance," said Michael Riedlinger, president of NaturalNano.
Using nanotechnology, particles of copper are inserted into nanotubes, which are ultra-tiny tubes that occur naturally in halloysite clay mined in Utah. Combined with a radio-filtering device that collects phone signals from outside a shielded space, certain transmissions can proceed while others are blocked, the Chicago Tribune reported.
However, the wireless phone industry is up in arms over the development.
"We oppose any kind of blocking technology," said Joe Farren, spokesman for The Wireless Association, the leading cell phone trade group. "What about the young parents whose baby-sitter is trying to call them, or the brain surgeon who needs notification of emergency surgery? These calls need to get through."
20 years ago, we didn't have this issue as most people didn't have cells or even pagers, but now many more people are 'always connected'. Is this a case of enforing a restriction that should be a personal responsibility?

I think blocking the signal is a little out of control. Places can say 'if you use a cell-phone on our property you are banned for a year' if they really think it is that important.
I'm not a brain surgeon, but sometimes I play doctor w/my wife. Anyways, when we have a babysitter we absolutely want access to the phone for emergencies.

That's a good point, and a valid reason to keep the cell phone on (and to me, one of the few times people truly need to be contantly connected!). Hopefully you use the silent operation/vibrate mode. However, I've been in seminars/professional meetings with the speaker talking away up front, and off goes someone's cell phone!! Very annoying (one poor guy was interrupted by three different cell phones over a 20-minute period :realmad: ) - when that happens, I like the thought of paint that can block out cell phone signals, and the associated interruptions.
If everyone paid attention to the reminders posted about turning cell phones off (or putting on silent mode) then we wouldn't even have an issue.

Rather than blocking everyone's signals, including those with enough manners to use silent/vibrate mode, perhaps a better technology to employ would be this.

You know, the only thing that makes up for listening to some ass on the phone during a movie, is watching the ushers bounce them out...

Maybe there could be a civil ordinance that issues a ticket for any cell phone disturbances in public performance areas: Church (Can't believe this happens as much as it does), Movies, resturants. It might be hard to difine, but there could easily be some restrictions and that could be enforced through a fine/ticket.
I hate hearing someone else's rign tone during a presentation or movie as much as the next one, but this paint is going to far. I usually will keep my phone on silent/vibrate so that I can still get a text message if someone needs to get a hold of me. Sometimes it is necessary for a babysitter or family member.

naaa people that let their cells ring at church only need to be publically embarrassed. Just having the preacher stop and stare at the offender should nail the lesson home
At movies they should be asked/made to leave. no need to make a crime of it... besides the movie tickets and wasted popcorn would probably cost more than any fine...

electronic jamming is, but passive blocking isn't.
I've been in plenty of stores with lots of metal and electronics where I couldn't get a signal. This is just a similar effect using a paint like substance
