People leaving Amimsite???

There have been a few long time users who make announcements about "leaving Aximsite". They often sound rather remorseful and state their gratitude to the fine folks of Aximsite but indicate they must "move on". Heck, I almost get misty-eyed myself.

But wait a minute, this ain't like an Irish lad in the 1840's leaving behind his family and everything he is familiar with to make a better life on a different continent.

With a couple of keystrokes anybody with electricity, a computer, and an Internet connection can visit Aximsite anytime. Even if they get a different job or another circumstance which may demand large portions of their time, it seems if Aximsite was as important to them as they indicate, they would be able to be pop in once in while and forego the dramatics.

Well, heck -- now, there's a strong word, huh? I'll say it again all in caps -- HECK.

I'll say this right now to save people reading all my nonsense, then again at the end of the post for emphasis: I think people leave because they realize that a Pocket PC just isn't the solution for them.

People having sold their Axims? Yes, that would be a reason to leave (not necessarily a good one, but a reason, nonetheless).

I don't think those repeat posts are all so bad. Oh, yes, it is a bit annoying to get that daily "What is the best GPS software?" question sometimes, but they all help to build a strong community and make the site interesting. Aximsite is a very strong and beneficial community no matter what type of device you own. Honestly, I've never seen a real, live X50 or X51, but these devices (Axims, Ipaqs, even the two million converged devices) are so similar that most of the topics are applicable across the board. The fact that you can come here and feel comfortable asking anything makes this site, in my opinion, the best Pocket PC-related site on the net.

I occasionally spend some time over at the 'official' Asus site, PocketMatrix, but it's not too exciting when there are only two posts a day and nobody answers your questions. In fact, you can expect a good flame if you ask something too simple or something that has been asked in the past. Not that it is a bad site -- I think the administrator does a great job -- but there isn't much of a community there. And, that's what these things are all about.

But, you know, I think many people come to the realization that these Pocket PCs just aren't the right thing for them. There is a great fascination with watching movies and the such, but you know what? You have to re-encode those movies before you play them. Games? Well, if that's your primary interest, you really should be looking at something like a PSP instead. Pocket PCs are great and they can do great things, but they aren't so apparent right out of the box. Not like when you buy a Windows XP computer and you pretty much know what you're getting -- and you can run ALL the programs your familiar with, without losing valuable information or having to dig deep in the valleys of software development to find what you need. Pocket PCs are much different, with different programs and different hoops to make these things jump through.

I've stuck with these things for the past five years now. I'm still finding new programs on occasion, but I really have gotten it to the point that I have a laptop replacement -- mostly because my job doesn't require any specialized software that has to date only been developed for WinXP. I have the right mix of programs and sync functions that I can step up from my PC at any moment, grab my Pocket PC out of the cradle and walk away, and have all of the latest information, files, and projects that I am currently working on. This is the holy grail, and it isn't as easy as it sounds. You also have to realize that you don't have to buy a new one every six months. These things can be productive for quite some time in the future. Further, I spend a fair amount of time on the road away from the office. That's where these things really excel, whether you're using them to watch movies on the plane or working on some important topics for that meeting you have when you first arrive.

I really think that some people just come to the realization that they don't fully utilize their Pocket PC, and don't utilize them enough to justify their existence. Maybe they enjoy the community more than the device. Maybe they enjoy making the device jump through all the hoops they can before they realize that it isn't really making them more productive. That's fun stuff, too.

I think people leave because they realize that a Pocket PC just isn't the solution for them.

Well I have been around from the start, you may not guess it from my limited post count, but I have other things in life to occupy me, other sites to participate in but I always check back in and stir things up a bit and then slow down again. Life moves on and so do we.

One only needs to speak one name, and all of Aximsite is silent in morning.

May he work in peace.:waaa::waaa::waaa: :waaa::waaa:

I shall now sit with my computer in silence for the next 30 seconds. Then I'm back to browsing Aximsite....
