a) I buy a new system, it's OEMed
b) It's not going to strain my computer (Athlon XP 2600+, 512mb ram, ATI X300se)
c) It's going to be more stable than XP.
No - I don't think M$ will ever allow linux apps to run on Windows.
Use Linux!!! It's free and faster (more responsive) than Windows.

Preach brother! Vista will be so DRM-ridden that MS will practically know what's on your HDD any time they want. I'll be keeping WinXP, but only to use programs that I need to work (ActiveSync, Dreamweaver, Photoshop/ImageReady/Bridge, and EAC to rip CDs).

Lol, I like how the people just bash Vista since its an MS product.....WITHOUT EVEN USING IT.
I have used most of the Builds and it is actually pretty decent...plus it is still a beta so it is going to be slow....thats why its a BETA.
Also, it is bringing in new graphics features and ideas that are not in the older OSs as its a new OS. Think about it this way, can you run XP with all its nice GUI features on your old 300Mhz Laptop that was made for win95 easily with it being fast? No, you can't. It is the same with Vista, it is ment for the more powerful systems out there and it is for the next generation. My 3.4 with a Nvidia 6800 can run Build 5308 smoothly, maybe its not as fast as XP, but thats just because its ment for the future.
It has some really nice features and it really is not that DRM ridden as all the rumours are saying. Also, dont bring linux into this as its a totally different deal, the wide spread world cannot use Linux as it is not simple to use...there are no simple installers, widespread programs, etc. Windows/Mac and Linux are in two separate worlds.
You can bash what I say all you want, but I am a systems designer and thats just how it is in my mind, also, win2000 will likely still be supported when Vista comes out, I have no idea where that rumour came from considering they still provide updates for 98 every now and then!
Linux is great, for certain things, Windows is good for certain things....
Yeah, I've got a beta version of it. It's more eye-candy than anything right now, but overall it seems pretty nice. I'm not using it currently though because it's kind of slow, and the lack of drivers annoys me. That and I'm running a 32-bit version, instead of the 64-bit that I should be...
Hey, as Grentz said, its not bad! I have it too, and I think it runs VERY quickly, considering its on VmWare, a virtual machine. I'm sure it would be MUCH faster if it were on a real computer.

MS has a long-standing policy of blanket support for the two latest OSes. Sure, security updates are/will be available for some of the older OSes,
Quote:
Windows NT 4.XX is now out of support and Microsoft is no longer producing public monthly security updates or service packs.
but no further SP's will be available for Win2k.
Note that I do realize that this is a very practical policy, and that it would be ridiculous for them to continue supporting such OS as Windows 3.11 for workgroups still, as it would be an incredible drain on their resources with very little return. Dropping support on older operating systems saves us money.
But it's still a funny image, Bill Gates setting Win98SE into a small raft made of reeds and floating it down the Nile river.

Sorry, but I have too much software that won't run on linux. Besides, I like the challenge :).
