i'll NEVER upgrade to vista. i'll buy i new one, all upgrading does it put old machines under uneccassary strain and they crash more. Besides this will still word process and run old games anyway. Once it becomes aincent i'll turn into a server or a primative TIVO. So yeah, never upgrade.

I agree- I'll be buying a new machine when vista comes out (well, after it comes out). My 2.4gHz 512M is showing its age, and the warranty is about to pop so... time to move up! As a side note I've played with a few builds (I never had enough hardware to get it to run in Aero Glass - oh well) and they were fun. I did see a TechNet presentation where the guy had a new laptop (2G memory, 120G hd, don't know the processor but it seemed very speedy) - his hardware rating was a 3 - just enough to enable all the Vista visual features. People commented- the general concensus was that "it's a laptop" - although high-end, all the indivudual components were relatively "ok" compared to desktop components (slower memory, HD, etc).

Also, it is bringing in new graphics features and ideas that are not in the older OSs as its a new OS. Think about it this way, can you run XP with all its nice GUI features on your old 300Mhz Laptop that was made for win95 easily with it being fast? No, you can't. It is the same with Vista, it is ment for the more powerful systems out there and it is for the next generation. My 3.4 with a Nvidia 6800 can run Build 5308 smoothly, maybe its not as fast as XP, but thats just because its ment for the future.
It has some really nice features and it really is not that DRM ridden as all the rumours are saying. Also, dont bring linux into this as its a totally different deal, the wide spread world cannot use Linux as it is not simple to use...there are no simple installers, widespread programs, etc. Windows/Mac and Linux are in two separate worlds.
You can bash what I say all you want, but I am a systems designer and thats just how it is in my mind, also, win2000 will likely still be supported when Vista comes out, I have no idea where that rumour came from considering they still provide updates for 98 every now and then!
Linux is great, for certain things, Windows is good for certain things....

Bingo....the real reason we need new OSs. If we stuck with the Old Ones there would be no need to upgrade your hardware(unless you're a gamer or in the top 1% of users) Truth is most of us could do everything we need with last year's hardware and not need to upgrade except it won't run the new OS

I'll wait awhile to see if anyone has any major problems before I upgrade. I've only had XP for about a year, I bought a new computer to get it. I may not get Vista until I buy another computer.

After getting burned by the hype on everything between Windows 95 and ME I think I'll stick with XP Pro as long as I can. Too many money grabs in between don't you think? Bill finally got it reasonably right with XP and that wasn't great until SP2. Will wait at least a year before venturing into Vista with business critical apps.
