I remember once, back when I was getting started - I wrote a $10 check for some groceries. The bank bounced it THREE TIMES before I could get my paycheck into the account, to the tune of $9 each bounce for a total of $27 bank charges against a $10 check!
My wife and I have seperate checking accounts at the same bank. Due to the miracle of online banking I was able to spot a potential overdraft on her account and transfer money from mine to cover it before getting socked with check fee...
...only to find the next day that she had also written a check on my account (since her balance was low) and forgot to tell me about it. It bounced.

My new favorite quote (attrributed to Mark Twain, although i haven't been able to confirm the attribution or the wording):
"Those who don't read the newspaper are uninformed.
Those who do read the newspaper are missinformed."
That really sucks! Honestly, I can't sympathize with you because I have never overdrawn my account but I can imagine that it isn't very pleasant. Sorry.
