*sigh* well if i must. (converting an old pc to a router)
okay. well i have finally decided to put my haxored linksys vonage router to rest. i figure i will get an old pc and install a dhcp server on it. anyone know of an app that will do this for windows xp pro? my rules are
*must be able to administer through web basied interface
*must incude ip reserve function
no no, what i mean is any router apps that will run on windows xp pro?
chris
What folks are saying, and what I am recommending is that you use IPCop or smoothwall. IPCop, after initial setup, can be configured and managed using a browser interface on your XP or any other browser capable machine. These programs are both free and far superior to any app that runs 'on-top-of' XP or any other win-blows bloat ware out there.
My fav is IPCop, but you can go with what you like.
Cheers.

ABF you have to hand it to Star882 for the quick and efficient help, especially in light of you "calling her out" the other day. Class move by Star in helping you out. Kudos. Kfed says hey.
IPCop and Smoothwall are some of the Best Firewalls out there (IPCop is based on the Smoothwall Code but adds some more features).
The other Plus is that they are both free.
It really is a linux distribution that is ment to be a firewall/router only and it does it amazingly. It can also run on pretty much nothing, so get the oldest PC you can get with some memory in it and your off and running.
I have used IPCop and Smoothwall a lot in Small Businesses and my own house, they both are awesome.
As far as a dhcp server on XP Pro, i have no idea why you would do that over using your linksys router. Seems kinda like a waste of a machine and a lot of configuring for nothing
<sigh> my linksys router crashed today. i tried to reset it but no dice. i d ont hav money to buy i new one. so does anyone know of a linux distro that has built in ipreserve, dhcp, firewall ect.?
i really need things to be up and running soon!
freesco is a nice firewall NAT router distribution, runs off a floppy or hdd, easy menubased setup, has a web based interface if you want, has dhcp server dns server ftp ssh alot of things, well worth a look, my 1st run of it i had going in about 15 mins, have been running it for about 3 years now.
last reboot was about 8 months ago
and it all runs on an old DX4-100 with 16 meg of ram, tho you can go as low as 8 meg
