I have a 10 year old daughter. Articles like this I take with a grain of salt, however, they do keep me mindful that I need to monitor my daughters activities in those chat rooms. I have debated people here in Kansas who say thats an invasion of privacy, and children should be free to communicate with thier friends whenever they want. My simple response is when they can prove to me that the person on the other side is a 10 year old little girl using the keyboard, not a 30 year old pervert trying to get her to meet him after school, then I will stop reading articles like this making mental notes about this stuff and give my daughter more freedom. Until then I monitor, monitor and monitor.
yes.......BUT when the artical is saying that every acrinime that your child types means something bad then it could be that your kid is having a harmless conversation with a friend from school and they use some acrinime that is menchinded as "bad" in that artical but in fact it means a whole differnt thing that is not "bad" it is just a way of saying something. and also not every one in the world is a perve. yes there are some people but not everyone like the media says...

Maybe that's how you took the article be... but there was a couple places in the begining of the article that made it clear that a lot of it was innocent. You have to remember that the national media in the US doesn't publish "informative" stories anymore. Information doesn't sell. This simple fact is they took something that could have been presented in a positive manor, and made it a bit more "sensationalist" by forcing the fact that there is a harmful side of it. This will make it to TV and in order for that to happen it has to be "edgy" ... or people won't watch it.
I don't agree with how they tried to portray the information... it should have been done with a positive message and used to teach parents instead of trying to scare them.

I thought POS stood for piece of s___, not parent over shoulder... I also haven't heard of any of the other ones that they labeled "dangerous". Maybe I should count myself lucky

Do you think all parents are idiots? What makes a good parent is knowing where and what thier kids are doing. Not broading over them constantly. Pick up a paper some time and read about all the predators on-line, read about all the stings going on, and them write posts like you did. The internet is a great thing. It provides vast amounts of knowledge to our kids. But as a parent I need to know what my 10 year is looking at and who they are talking too. If articles like the one you don't like help me, well that's life.
what im mad about is that leetspeak is NOT what they are talking about. they are mixing up 2 differnt things. although yes it is alerting parents but the thing is that it is giving parents WRONG info.
chris
Now I understand ... yep, they'll probably hear from people on that one. Sounds like they were trying to fill some space and pushed the story out faster than it should have been done - someone didn't check the details (or got them confused)!

My oldest is 7. She is trusting and naive. But I've seen very sharp people get taken by scams, imagine what can happen to a child. Articles like this are helpful to clueless, out of touch parents like me. Keep 'em coming.
I am kinda with ABF and I am 48 year old father of 4 mostly grown teenagers.
Yes, parents should be aware of potential dangers but many times we as the public latch onto something because it is dramatic and ignore the more common and less headline grabbing problems. Statistics tell us that 1 in 3 women have been sexually assaulted, mostly from someone the girl knows. Domestic violence occurs in 1/3 of households. And this is not a new phenomenon, its happened for eons, across social lines. It is depressing to be in a meeting, classroom, or other gathering and realize that there is percentage of adults present who have done horrible things, to their own family members.
Yes, we should be wary about kids and the Internet but remember that as a society the larger problem rests a little closer to home.

Fsman - I agree wholeheardedly with you. However, for those of us who try our best to keep out children out of harms way, which as you know with 4 daughters is almost next to impossible, the internet can be a dangerous place. When I was 10 there was no internet, Al Gore had not invented it yet. We are trying to raise kids in enviornments of sexual abuse, drug abuse, and other issues. Articles like this, no matter of the "accuracy" make me think, wow my daughter just sent the initials B.O.T - what does that mean. As a father I need to know what going on.
Yeah, but it seems like they made half of that stuff up I have never seen this "nifoc". If people are stupid enough to talk to sexual predetars its there own damn fault. Although it may not be the kids, Some parents are too lazy to teach there kids or teach them morals. There either working or too lazy.....Thats our generation...Preety sad isnt it?
