Let me get this straight...CBS writes an article alerting parents about codes used by kids on PCs and IM to talk to their friends and possibly sexual predators and you think this is bad because why?

Who's the idiot? Parents are in charge, not children, at least in my house!

I gotta agree with kcallahan on this one - stories like this may be the only way some parents realize what their kids are actually doing. Why are they a bunch of idiots? Even if the codes in the article are all wrong, it may get some parents paying attention. And one day, aximbigfan, you'll be over 40 too .

I know I'd need a translator looking at that stuff!

I'm behind ABF on this one...

What they are describing is more IM-Speak than leetspeak.

Leetspeak is more or less the replacing of letters with numbers and punctuation marks that look similar to the letters they replace.

For example:

I love cats
=

! <3 <475

Not the best example, but you get the idea.

I think they were having a slow news day when this story was written.

Now I undewrstand. I should have looked at his profile. Well, in 20+ years when he has a teenager of his own his opinion will change.

yea but still...they totally bombed this story because what they wrote about as no relevance to what they said they were writing about.... they wrote about to totally different types of talking in ims....

what im mad about is that leetspeak is NOT what they are talking about. they are mixing up 2 differnt things. although yes it is alerting parents but the thing is that it is giving parents WRONG info.

ABF ... granted the information may be wrong, but in the world to day there are too many people (adults) that are utterly clueless when it comes to what their children are doing online.

Reality is most parents could give to sh!ts what you and you friends are talking about... the problem is there are so many people online that have no other goal than to exploit children for sexual purposes.

I have an 8 year old. My biggest fear is not that she be online and conversing with friends, gaming, or whatever... my biggest fear is that some perverted/mentally deprived pig gets ahold of her information and tracks her down to take advantage of her....

Parents need basic information (complete accuracy of the information is not required) so they have a slight understanding of what is going on. Again its not so that they can pry into the childs private life, but to help protect them until they can understand better how to protect themselves.

I'm sure this was caused when some editor pulled a couple of different articles together and didn't really understand the topic. However, if you send them a message and call them idiots or morons everything you say after that will not be read. If you want to make a positive impact write them a message and explain where their article was mixing up IM and leetspeak.

yes.......BUT when the artical is saying that every acrinime that your child types means something bad then it could be that your kid is having a harmless conversation with a friend from school and they use some acrinime that is menchinded as "bad" in that artical but in fact it means a whole differnt thing that is not "bad" it is just a way of saying something. and also not every one in the world is a perve. yes there are some people but not everyone like the media says...

Someone needs to write articles like this to keep parents informed. While I know many of those "codes" from my years of playing Everquest, most do not.

leet speak or whatever we call it, I need a translator too. I have no freaking clue what something says half the time.

PS. To anyone that cares, the button helps a ton. Well I guess if you are talking leet or whatever it's called, is useless.
