putting my soldering skills to the test..

as many of you know my das has been teaching me to solder. another thing you guy might know is that since i work in the computer busness i tend to have quite a few old pre pentium laptop laying around. another thing is that i have a growing need for an lcd screen (you can see where this is going) i was thinking about maybe taking the screen out of one of the notebookes soldering it to a controller and then to a vga cable. does anyone have an plans/scematics for this? the laptops that are on the choping block are a winbook xp5 and a compaq armoda.

I do not know about those laptops for sure, but a lot of the older laptops I have fixed/done operations on have special Video setups that are made to work only with the screen they come with. The biggest problem you will find with putting a normal LCD into a laptop is the power for the inverter. The inverters from full size LCDs are usually for one thing much larger, and for another require different voltages.

It is not a for sure type thing, as it varies by laptop, but even with soldering skills it could be hard to accomplish.

Another thing you could consider would be to solder into the backside of the external VGA connector instead of trying to interface with the connector for the on laptop screen :approve:

I too would love to do this. I have an old Compaq laptop that's pathetic right now... I looked into selling it, but the best I found was $50. No way am I sellin' it for that little. Anyways, it has a perfectly good screen, nice and thin. I'd love to convert it into a vga screen, but the limitations have already been mentioned. Still, I'm looking into it.

@gretz i am trying to take the lcd out. not put a new one in.
@uzzia0 well do you want to buy one? the winbook has a pentium mmx 255mhz. and the armoda has a pII with i suspect to be 400mhz.

As far as taking it out, you will have the biggest problem with trying to get power to it. You also would probably need parts from a regular LCD and then MAYBE it would work, but still, there is a lot more than just soldering things together....

In my experience, it's basically impossible to turn a laptop LCD into a standard monitor. Getting the right controller setup, the right power, and putting it all together would take a miracle.
