Join the Act! Software Users Group
Robman and I both use Act! Software for contact management and have tossed around some great ideas to each other. There are many users of Outlook, but very few Act! users, so lets start a thread to share ideas. Anyone can participate, even if you just want to ask questions. You don't have to have Act! software to ask a question.
About me:
I use Act! 6 and Act! Link. I never really was able to use Act! on the pocket pc and had switched to Outlook but was unhappy. Robman convinced me to give Act! Link another chance and now I'm quite happy. Both he and I have found that with Act! Link working, Active Sync will syncronize then quit immediately afterwards. Anytime I make changes to my Act! database I have to remove the Ax from the cradle and reseat it to syncronize. I can deal with that.
Groups:
I also have found that the groups, thus far, have not transferred over properly from Act! onto the Ax as categories. Only about 25% have transferred for some reason.
Field Linking:
I was able to find some fields on the pocket pc that I wasn't using but that show up on the main screen, like Job Title and Department, and link those to custom fields from my Act! database so that they display account number and a special made-up field. You can't do that in Outlook!
Please add your ideas. Do you use Companion Link or Intellisync?

I would like to know more about ACT
I have been wondering about some of the contact management programs available. I am involved with industrial sales and feel that the right program would be very helpful to someone who is organizationally challenged such as myself. I have heard good things about Goldmine but I don't know if they have anything that will work on my x51v. I am also curious about ACT and would like to Know if they have trial downloads available. I realize that any good contact management program (as opposed to a simple PIM) is not going to be free or even cheap so I want to be able to play around with it na little bit before I sink my hard earned bucks into it. Any insight from people familiar with these or similar programs wiil be most appreciated.

Act and Goldmine are very comparable and both are excellent. I have Act 6 and I don't think the newer versions have improved much b/c the software is so good already. It's really easy to use. I bought Act for Dummys b/c there's alot of stuff you can customize and change. You can make it extremely complex if you wish, but the software as a whole is very easy to use. I imagine Goldmine is the same. I bet you can buy a copy of Act 6 on ebay very cheap. PM me for more info.

I use Act and upgraded to be able to sync Act but I do not see many advantages. To sync I had to upgrade, buy a third party rogram to do so and it looks and works like the default contact. Unless I am missing something. I have used Act for years.

Iaogo, welcome to Aximsite, and expecially welcome to my little Act! Software Users Group! Can you tell us a little more about what specific versions you're using? What 3rd party program etc, what version of Act! etc? Thanks, we're looking forward to hearing more from you. Maybe we can learn from you and vice versa.

I have used ACT since version 1 (DOS) and even with all the changes and improvements version 6 is still the best. I am currently running ACT 2006 and would revert back to ACT 6 if I could. I started using Companionlink a few years ago and would highly recommend it if you want to sync ACT with the Axim. Companionlink works flawlessly, I currently use it with X51V, ACT 2006 and Activesync 4.1.

stevenator65,
I've got a firend who is currently using ACT! with his palm and loves it. He's been thinking of switching over to a pocket PC, but has been concerened about how good ACT! is on the Picket PC. Do you know if there are any differeences and does it work with blue tooth to dial contacts or give you a caller id funtionality?

Jimmur - great feedback. I'm scared to upgrade Act b/c I love Act 6 and there are absolutely no features I want to change or add. I tried to buy Companion Link but had lots of trouble installing it so I called their service. They couldn't get me working and asked me to send them my log file so they could analyze the problem. They never got back to me, so I installed the free Act Link and it works fine.
Spauldio - I had a palm and Act for Palm and it's totally different. Act for Palm is an actual software version of Act that's far better than the link software the we pocket pc users have. He'll be downgrading, I'm afraid, if he goes w/a pocket pc. So yes, there's a major difference.

Thanks, I upgraded to Act 2006 for a Treo and Axim51 and then bought the CompanionLink and it works fine( Was a little disppointed I had to spend more $ to
move mt contacts), but it doesn't really look or run like Act it just dumps the info into the existing contacts, tasks etc, which is fine but not worth all the upgrades.
And then again I may be missing something here. BTW how do I find this thread again without just stumbling on it?:icon_band

To always find it put a link in your signature. You're right that Companion Link is just a linkand not an actual software program. Palm users get actual Act software.

To put this thread into your signature all you do is go to the top of the page where it says, "Quick Links", then go to "Edit Signature", then copy the following into your signature:
url=http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=126503]Act Users Group[/url
Just add an opening bracket ([) before the string of characters and a closing bracket (]) after the entire string of characters. Then you'll be able to click on it anytime and get to this thread.

New use for ACT and my x50v
I'm starting a new position with an automotive parts service company (sorting suspect parts, certifying shipments as compliant to requirements, analyzing supplier locations, and so on)
The key to success in this type of business is an ability to track all details, prepare them for distribution, followup and sales.
My experience with the Axim is limited (purchased used last year as a contact info device) and my experience with ACT is limited to ACT 2000 which I never had need of to begin with at my old location.
So consider me an experienced newcomer - I need help deciding if I should invest in ACT! 6 with the Link to Pocket PC or not. Is it worth the money and effort?(ebay has several for under $100)
I still haven't explored my AXIM completely, never accomplished a WiFi connection and never did figure out how to internet connect.
Any help? Anything?
Mike Hilliard
