Media Bias vs. political spin machine

In one corner, trying to make every issue into a disaster to drive ratings we have Media Bias.

In the other corner, attempting to divert attention from politically damaging policies and decisions we have The "Political 'spin' machine"

which one will win...

Snow issues detailed rebuttals to media coverage of the president

WASHINGTON - New White House Press Secretary Tony Snow is starting off in a combative mode against the press by issuing detailed rebuttals to what he considers unfair coverage of Bush.

“The New York Times continues to ignore America’s economic progress,” blared the headline of an e-mail sent to reporters Wednesday by the White House press office.

Minutes earlier, another e-mail blasted CBS News, which has had an unusually rocky relationship with the White House since 2004, when CBS aired what turned out to be forged documents in a failed effort to question the president’s military service.

“CBS News misleadingly reports that only 8 million seniors have signed up for Medicare prescription drug coverage,” Wednesday’s missive said. “But 37 million seniors have coverage.” On Tuesday, the White House railed against “USA Today’s misleading Medicare story.”

“USA Today claims ‘poor, often minority’ Medicare beneficiaries are not enrolling in Medicare drug coverage,” the press office complained. “But by April, more than 70 percent of eligible African Americans, more than 70 percent of eligible Hispanics, and more than 75 percent of eligible Asian Americans are enrolled or have retiree drug coverage.”

White House sources said Snow, who started on the job Monday and has yet to give his first public press briefing, is determined to aggressively counter what the administration considers unfair assertions in both news and editorials about Bush. At the same time, he is eager to make the notoriously secretive administration more accessible to the press.

Well the Bush spin machine is still managing to keep prison camps running, wars justified, human rights abuses going...

clearly 1-0 to the spin doctors

Maybe "it's not the economy stupid" to paraphrase Bill Clinton. One of the most striking things about George Bush's slump in the approval ratings is that the US economy is firing on all cylinders.

The annual growth rate hit 4.8% in the first quarter, its fastest pace since 2003; the jobs figures for April show a drop in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits, and the unemployment rate is a relatively benign 4.7%.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, company profits keep growing and the Dow Jones is poised to break its record reached during the hi-tech bubble in January 2000. If Mr Bush was minded to, he could tell Americans that they have never had it so good, as indeed could Tony Blair with British citizens.

Yet for most Americans the glass is very much half-empty.

They worry about high petrol prices, they don't like the way the war is going in Iraq and they are turned off by allegations of sleaze swirling around the Republican party in Washington.

It's a predicament that Al Gore, who lost to Mr Bush in the controversial 2000 presidential race, would be familiar with. Despite a healthy economy, Mr Gore - who might have another go for the White House - went down to defeat.

Now it's Mr Bush who must be feeling thoroughly exasperated to see his poll numbers plummet even as the economy soars.
on the other

Quote:
May 11, 2006 — The Dow Jones is up, unemployment is down, and the economy is booming.

Middle-income Americans, however, may still feel the crunch — especially as interest rates rise. They'll see little help from the $70 billion tax cut the Senate is expected to pass.

Remember a few summers ago when we all got checks in the mail from Uncle Sam after the first Bush tax cuts? The bill moving through Congress this week extends those tax cuts for a couple more years, giving tax breaks for investors and helping about 15 million Americans avoid something called the alternative minimum tax.

The Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank, discovered that the top 0.1 percent of taxpayers — the people who make more than $1.8 million — would get back $82,000. Middle-income Americans making between $27,000 and $47,000 would get $20.

"This is another series of tax cuts for rich people. The vast majority of the benefits goes to people earning over a hundred thousand dollars a year," said Len Burman, director of the Tax Policy Center.

Republicans in Congress defended this tax cut, saying the robust economy was partly thanks to the cuts passed three years ago.

"The American economy has surged because of the Republican tax relief," said Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill.

There's also a move in Congress to pass a second tax cut soon, so middle-income Americans may eventually get a little more than $20. That's little comfort right now to those struggling to make payments on their homes because of rising interest rates.

I don't feel like taking a stand on any side. But I have a question. What incentive does someone have to run for office? They are underpaid and highly criticized. The internet has sped up the disemination of information to the point that we know instantaneously what's going on. And everyone is quick to point fingers. How about looking in the mirror first. If you haven't signed up for medicare and you're eligible, who's fault is that?

I believe we should all take responsibility for our actions first, before pointing the finger of blame at others. It's very easy to critique, but if you think you can do better than by all means, let's see what you can do.

Next issue, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, home of Radimus. Who in their right mind would build such a monstrosity, and who in their right mind would drive 190 feet over open ocean for 5 miles?

Since I use the Old Skyway as a premier fishing location, the Skyway is a wonderful thing.

Additionally, if it wasn't for the bridge, it would take about 2.5 hours to travel to the far side of it via ground.

Then there's the perceptual biases of those who "consume" the news and spin.

It's way way way too high! Very beautiful, though. I remember last year when I was making sales calls in Florida, I was driving north on 75 and stopped in Port Charlotte to see some customers. We had a nice talk and I told them I don't like big bridges over water and they asked me where I was going next. I told them Tampa and they said I better not take 275. Well, that was on my route so I asked them why. They told me about this bridge, so I drove in absolute terror for the next several hours and made sure I stayed on 75 and took the long way. You'd have to kill me to get me on that thing!

I'm doing my Florida trip soon and I'd love to see that bridge in person, but I ain't going on it. At least not to the top. But fishing looks fun.:approve:
