At times even if some machine can run XP and SP2 it doesn't mean that they will for long. Often refurb servers and PCs are holding components that will act up after the OS is loaded and crash the box. It may be another software that generate teh access of higher memory area and make the system unstable. Only testing of the component will determined if the box is compatible. Remember that some PC are built cheap. My 2¢

I remember configuring TCP/IP on Windows 3.11 at work and after two days of configurations, drivers test etc... I finally connected to the network for the first time.

Sorry about your problems, ABF! Reading the thread especially netsyd's post made me curious to ask an OT question, if that's OK. What is slipsteaming? This Inquiring tech mind wants to know. TIA

i9ts when you combine a windows cd with some other package. generally taking all of the stuff out of the package expet for the stuff you need.
this is the 5th time that sp2 has bricked an os. i upgraded my custom computer to sp2 and it would restart at random times. so i formated it and followed ms's directions on how to install it. it still did it! this hapend at leats 4 times in row. i am starting to relized that ms is made u p of idiots who dont know th fist thing about programming.. so now i have to format and re-do it. i spent nearly 6 hours re-doing all m awttings. well i am off to cal ms and speck my mind:realmad: :realmad: :realmad: :realmad: :realmad:

Maybe the problem isn't with SP2. Maybe it's with your hardware. I very rarely have problems with SP2 and when I do it is usely caused by end user.

As ABF said its adding the files directly to the install cd.
But more specifically as well, its replacing the files on the CD as well. This means it is loaded with the newest versions when you install XP for the first and you usually get a more stable load by not having it try to "patch" preexisting files on the live Operating System.
Thanks for the answers, Chris and Grentz! One more tech term added to the toolbox. This one sounds worthwhile if a patched XP machine needs a clean start. It becomes a one step process instead of two. :approve:
then after that you can use this tool http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html to remove things you dont want windows to install by default, add drivers and more to the disk.
if you use a program like nlite you can slipstream all post sp2 updates, along with packages such as avg virus scan, adobe acrobat reader, all the standard bits you would install first when you reinstall.
