OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper says news reports that Iran could require Jews and Christians to wear coloured labels in public might be true.
He says Iran's hardline Islamist government has proven itself capable of such extreme actions.
He called a law allegedly being considered in Iran a mind-boggling reminder of Nazi German practices.
He says reports that Iran is considering a law to force Jews to wear yellow labels, and Christians red ones, are a reminder to the world that Iran must never gain nuclear weapons.
He made the remarks at a news conference with Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
Both leaders said they could not confirm the reports. But Howard said colour-coding clothes by religion would be repugnant.

Several experts are casting doubt on reports that Iran had passed a law requiring the country’s Jews and other religious minorities to wear coloured badges identifying them as non-Muslims.
The Iranian embassy in Otttawa also denied the Iranian government had passed such a law......
....Hormoz Ghahremani, a spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in Ottawa, said in an e-mail to the Post yesterday that, “We wish to categorically reject the news item.
“These kinds of slanderous accusations are part of a smear campaign against Iran by vested interests, which needs to be denounced at every step.”

And just to be clear :) The fact that a motion dictating this may have even attempted to be passed is bad enough. But I don't believe that we're getting the full story.

Man, I really hope they will come to their sences and their spritual leader (who's approving laws in Iran de facto) wont allow such a law to exist. This actiln is said to be a part of a new "dressing code" law which won't allow "western" style clothing for men and women. Although I'm the first to support people's (and countries') uniqueness and self-expression, it smells awfully like a human rights issue
You know... if the the little colored flag doesn't work out, they might just go for tattoos...
Helps quite a bit to draw a line in the sand... to know what side of the line people need to be on.

Incidentally, when GWB first called out Iran and N. Korea in the "Axis of Evil" speech, I was uncomfortable with it, as they were both relatively iinactive at the time. Since then, they have done everything possible to live up to the label.
