May 21, 2006 — There is no official Category 6 for hurricanes, but scientists say they're pondering whether there should be as evidence mounts that hurricanes around the world have sharply worsened over the past 30 years — and all but a handful of hurricane experts now agree this worsening bears the fingerprints of man-made global warming.
In fact, say scientists, there have already been hurricanes strong enough to qualify as Category 6s. They'd define those as having sustained winds over 175 or 180 mph. A couple told me they'd measured close to 200 mph on a few occasions.
The Saffir-Simpson hurricane category scale is based on wind speed: A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds from 74 to 95 mph, Category 2 has sustained winds from 96 to 110 mph, Category 3 has sustained winds from 111 to 130 mph, Category 4 has sustained winds from 131 to 155, and a Category 5 storm has sustained winds greater than 155 mph.
The categories run in roughly 20 mph increments, so a Cat 6 would be greater than 175 or 180 mph.
"Remember, for each 10 mph increase of wind speed," says atmosphere scientist Greg Holland, "there's about 10 times more damage, and 20 times more financial loss."
In other words, the increase is not "linear" but "exponential."

that is the first thing I thought of as well... The media was capped at saying cat 5, and was running out of ways to exacerbate the drama

Have they all gone Mad! Imagine the confusion. One of the worlds greatest Natual Disasters rated on a scale from one to.......six! Wont that just watter down the effect. Would you evacuate now for a three, its only half max! NO WAY!
More important is that the catch phrase "Caused by the Global Warming side effect of SUVs"
I can just picture some schmuck standing on a wind swept beach or parking lot, one hand holding a mic, the other holding his yellow rain hat on his head. "Here comes the first cat 6 hurricane ever, run for your lives! Damn you, SUV owners!!" Just before a palm frond impales him.
Would probably get good ratings...

Our local newspaper just ran a special insert concerning hurricanes. According to this insert, cat 6 hurricanes do not exist.
Not YET they don't....remember scales are inventions of humans attempting to categorize natural phenomena....nature MAY have much more we have yet to experience! Can you imagine the scale value for the giant red spot on Jupiter (supposedly a titanic cyclonic storm of some sort!)

Much like the temperature all that is really important is what it "Feels" like. So we need a touchy feely huricane scale depending on how one feels. For example the Katrina in New Orleans was a 4 but felt like a 100. Because it messed up so much stuff. While the 5 catagory 3 and 4 huricanes that hit Florida the year before felt like 2s because the did not cause that much of a disturbance.
That way the Weather Tard that is reporting from the eye wall can lean into the wind and tell us that its a catagory 2 huricane winds but it feels like 57. That way people who live in huricane free areas, like North East Ohio(NEO), will have a better Idea of what it feels like, and keep us watching the nonstop coverage......
Okay, Tropical Depressions to affect NEO but they just causes it to be cloudy and rain for several days on end. Chances are it was going to do that anyway. If we named every one of these events we would need 355 names a year.
