Reid bashed others for far less than he is 'accused' of here
Quote:
WASHINGTON -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid accepted free ringside tickets from the Nevada Athletic Commission to three professional boxing matches while that state agency was trying to influence him on federal regulation of boxing.
Reid, D-Nev., took the free seats for Las Vegas fights between 2003 and 2005 as he was pressing legislation to increase government oversight of the sport, including creation of a federal boxing commission that Nevada's agency feared might usurp its authority.
Reid defended the gifts, saying they would never influence his position on the bill and was simply trying to learn how his legislation might affect an important home state industry.
...
Several ethics experts said Reid should have paid for the tickets, which were close to the ring and worth between several hundred and several thousand dollars each, to avoid the appearance he was being influenced by gifts.
Two senators who joined Reid for fights with the complimentary tickets took markedly differently steps.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., insisted on paying $1,400 for the tickets he shared with Reid for a 2004 championship fight. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., accepted free tickets to another fight with Reid but already had recused himself from Reid's federal boxing legislation because his father was an executive for a Las Vegas hotel that hosts fights.

There has to be a happy middle ground. Politicians don't make much money compared to people in the public sector in comparable jobs, yet politicians should attend or see the various industries they seek to regulate, yet I don't feel they should pay for it out of their own pockets. If my boss told me to travel out of state and pay for it myself I'd say that wasn't right.
If these senators truly attended these boxing matches for educational purposes, then there should be a budget built in for that purpose. Otherwise they shouldn't receive any freebies, that would be like the old Payola scam from the early radio days.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Reversing course, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's office acknowledged Wednesday night he misstated the ethics rules governing his acceptance of free boxing tickets and has decided to avoid taking such gifts in the future.
The Nevada senator still believes it was "entirely permissible" for him to accept ringside seats for three professional boxing matches in 2004 and 2005 from the Nevada Athletic Commission but has nonetheless decided to avoid doing so in the future, his office said.
"In light of questions that have been raised about the practice, Senator Reid will not accept these kinds of credentials in the future in order to avoid even the faintest appearance of impropriety," spokesman Jim Manley said.
The announcement came after The Associated Press confronted Reid's office early Wednesday with conclusions from several ethics experts that the Senate leader misstated congressional ethics rules in trying to defend his actions.

Local/state politicians don't make much, but our Senators and Congressional representatives do OK, I think ... they sure make more than I do (I'm in the private sector).
What Reid did is not only perfectly legal. It is also completely acceptable under the ethics rules. Whether or not it should be is a completely different matter. In fact, it would have been ILLEGAL under Nevada law for him to reimburse Nevada for the "Credentials" he received, which by the way are NOT the same thing as tickets. http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/000788.php
As for Reid saying he won't do it again. That statement is also being taken out of context to make it appear as if he's indirectly admitting guilt. He is not and has never said he did anything wrong. He didn't. What he said is that if taking the credentials gives even the APPEARANCE of impropriety, then, even if perfectly legal and acceptable, he won't do it anymore because he does not wish to give that impression to the public. THAT in my opinion is a man of character. I'd like to see a Republican give up something just because it's made to APPEAR improper. The Republicans won't even give up the things that ARE improper.
I'm not saying Democrats are perfect. They have their corruptions just like any other party. Politicians are politicians after all. But, I'm sorry, nothing the Democrats are doing compares to the absolute corruption that is going on in the Republican party right now. They need to stop wasting time trying to drag the Democrats in on their corruption and start fixing their own corrupted mess.
I try to avoid blogs and ".orgs", which are typically agenda driven.
When a 'real' news outlet gets taken to task, it typically gets coverage... but blogger sits are usually 'opinion/editorials' and have less reliability.
But you and others are free to post references and stories as well.
I post ones that I find interesting, feel free to do the same yourself.

But surely you must find something interesting (in the same way as all your political posts) that in some way related to replublicans. I could post many posts relating the the political party I support and if I was prepared to post stories for the opposing party I would also post those for my party as well.
