There was a actually a study done fairly recently that showed that the willingness to die for one's religion was inversely proportional to the intelligence of the community. With the exception of the US, surprisingly.
I'll see if I can dig it up.

The more people are exposed to knowledge, differing views, other cultures; the less likely they are to be compelled by intolerant dogma... with the exception of the anti-social nutbags that retreat into the safety of narrowmindedness (and caves)

Off topic, but I don't see how this applies to him.

It was a simple decision for Mr Bush. A FoxNews poll found 80% of Republicans oppose same-sex marriage.
And little now is required of Mr Bush. The president has no constitutional role in passing an amendment.
The process will be difficult. The framers of the constitution set a high bar for amendments.
Both Republicans and Democrats say the amendment has no chance of being ratified quickly and little chance of being ratified at all.
...
While polls show that two-thirds of Americans oppose same-sex marriage, only a slight majority support an amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
...
If it is 80% of the republicans.. and only 20% of the dems, then it is effectively 50% of the country. If it is more than 20%, then it is the majority that oppose it...
So beyond making a speech to the masses supporting the popular opinion, this has nothing to do with GWB. Congress makes that decision.

The fact that someone is willing to die no matter what and where is pretty scary to me. You just fight a lost cause. This is the equivalent of japanese combat fighters willing to bring down their plane to the target...brainwashed to do whatever is ordered is a pretty evil concept IMO.
wea all ARE going to die sometime anyway. besides with the amount of torture you'd have to endure during which you may lose control of your tongue, which could put others, esp your family in danger it would be no harm to ensure that they don't catch you alive. this is refering to "suicide" bombings. why the quotes? because suicide is taking one's life in vain. they aren't doing it in vain, they're doing it in defense. against tanks, and all other hi-tech equipment. thankfully the axim wasn't enlisted!
I first found it surprising how the media, which has absolutely NO freedom of speech that "the west" prides itself on, potrayed the american army & co. as saviours/heroes and all opposition as evil, or a threat to the american way of life/democracy. quotes used for "the west" because I wish I didn't have to widen the gap that exists.
it would actually be quite easy to give the impression that muslims/arabs/etc are barbaric, evil, coarse because of the human fear of the unknown. the lack of knowledge possesed by people, in general, about each other.
I like stupid people. Especially anti-social nutbags. I find them funny. I like to ridicule them because they have oppinions that are different than mine. It is especially good when they have news coverage.
Right now my favoirites are The President of Iran, The President of Venizuala, Bush and Blair. In that order. I don't know why Blair is fourth, British people are usually funnier. Canadian's try to be funny but, except for Qubec, I find them quite lame.
What I find amusing in all my reading of Arab writings is the long history or “Western” atrocities against Muslims. Dating back to Crusades. Never once has any mention been made of Muslim atrocities. Apparently all Muslim warriors have behaved with the utmost consideration of those they have conquered. Well so far I have found this....
"
Towards this end the Muslim invaders undertook the desecration of places of worship, destruction of universities like Nalanda, the wholesale slaughter of the monks and priests to wipe out the intellectual bedrock of the people they overran.
"
I took a minute or two to google for this. I bet there are better "history" lessons.
the issue for this is symptomatic of islam. they have a version of "no graven images" and as such they have very little tolerance of any other religion. Very similar to the furor over the cartoon issue.
They weren't destroying it to be mean, they destroyed it because it was an affront to Allah.
If I was going to be snide, I'd say that most of the things they do to kill and destroy is to honor Allah. It seems a little oxymoronic to me, but who ever said that religious zealots were in their right mind.
Does anyone remenber the Star Trek TNG episode where the indigenous people thought Picard was a god? It is hard to know what God wants. Apparently people chose to fail around in religious zeal, than to choose introspection.
By that I mean, Since God doesn't talk to people much today, it is reasonable to assume that he didn't talk to many then. And since religions have lots of dogma and lessons, it seems that people in a vacuum of details, people will choose to do something to prove their devotion, than to sit around not knowing what to do... If they are lucky, they'll get it right. If they get it wrong, well at least they tried.
Come to think of it, it is a Roger Waters album as well...

I agree that most of these people are fanatics. But think for a moment what would anyone (including me and you) do if you are desperate and have nothing to loose...
I was devastated when people died in US in England , in Spain, etc from terrorist attacks. I don't want more innocent people dying around the world no matter what their religion is or where they live!
Ps. Sorry but my english vocabulary is limited to engineering and it's difficult to express myself on such delegate matters.
BTW... apparently the Canadians have been taking classes at GitMo.

Terror suspects 'tortured,' lawyers say
Jun. 12, 2006. 07:36 PM
CANADIAN PRESS
Tiny solitary cells under constant illumination, a mere 20 minutes of fresh air daily, and beatings at the hands of guards are indicative of the "torture" endured by some of the 17 people accused of plotting terrorist attacks in Canada, lawyers for the group said Monday.
The allegations of "cruel and unusual punishment" came as the court imposed a blanket publication ban on the legal proceedings, preventing the public from learning of any further evidence in a case of stunning allegations that has captured headlines around the world.
The treatment of the suspects, accused of plotting a number of terrorist strikes in Ontario that allegedly included bombings and taking senior politicians hostage, "constitutes torture," lawyer Rocco Galati said outside the court.
"That torture includes being kept in a room that's lit 24 hours a day, being woken up every half-hour, being beaten by the guards, on and on and on," said Galati, who represents Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, a 21-year-old health sciences graduate of McMaster University.
I wonder if they'd call 24 hrs of Celine Dion and Bryan Adams torture
