WildBlue Satellite Internet Service

I was wondering if anyone on here as any dealing with this company? Where I live at. The only thing that I have available to me is dialup. Must I say that it is getting very old. I had called the New AT&T power by SBC to see when DSL is going to be in my area.

I feel that the responds that I have received so far is that I will have the new WM5 update for my Axim X50 released from Dell before I will have DSL available for me. As of this point WildBlue looks like it the only answer. I just that I don’t want to sync so much money into something to have it half heartily work. I have already done that with WM5!

Here is the link for it. http://www.wildblue.com/

Yes, I have Wildblue. Let me put it this way... it beats dialup, but if I had any other high-speed option, I would not have Wildblue.

l can't say the service has been wonderful -- lately we have been getting frequent dropouts. We also had to have some equipment replaced early on.

But both my husband and I need Internet access for our work, and there are no other high speed options here, so we put up with it. It is a new company, so I can only hope the service improves.

Looks similar to HughesNet (Directv Sat Internet) which some of my family members have. The problem with Sat is that the lag (ping) times are very high, so you cannot do ANY online gaming, and it takes a minute for pages to start loading.

It is however much faster than dial up for downloads (the Directv Hookup I used got 70KB/s download speed where dialup is about 2-3KB/s download speed). And once the page starts to load, it comes in very fast.

So it is worth it IMO if you have nothing else, I do not know about wildblue though as I have never used their service.

Happy to be with Comcast and/or Verizon's fiber optics.
Both services are available in eastern Pennsylvania.

Here hoping for all in dial up areas!

I just wanted to add... don't expect to be able to use Skype on Wildblue. See this thread: http://www.wildblue.cc/wbforums/showthread.php?t=2168

That's a good forum to poke around if you want to know more about Wildblue. The good, bad and the ugly. My trials and tribulations are posted there under the same username I have here if you want to know the gory details.

There is a PCMCIA card available that provides satellite Internet on-the-go. I have no idea how well it works, but I have heard that it only works well outdoors (however, an external antenna can be connected for home and vehicle use). As such, it's ideal for those who frequently go on vacation.
For home use, stick to wired broadband if available.

Well, it is slow, but much faster than Dial Up for downloads and once pages start to load.

I have very slow DSL (only 512) since I live on the outskirts of town, it is way better than dial up, but actually slower for downloads than the Satellite connections. The big difference though is that Sat lag times are about 1000 and mine is 60, so i can still use skype and play games online

Ya, sat isnt the best, but if there is nothing else, its better than dial up!

First I want to thank everyone for the responds. Man Aximsite RULES! :approve:

This is a very hard decession to make. Didn't Congress pass a law or something that everyone in the USA is suppost to have access to High speed Internet by 2007?

It seem like I read something about that a few years ago. Just wondering if there is anything too it.

Well they installed the WildBlue Internet Service here this afternoon and I must say that I am very, very impressed. I am getting 1.5 megs download. I know that I am used to dialup and needless to say this is blowing dialup out of the water.

I am very Impressed
