An antihistamine like Benadryl (generic) does the trick for me when I need to get to sleep at a specific time, but usually I read until my head hits the book.
It does not leave any hangover, but has been demonstrated to help glob trotters recover from jet-lag.
You mean like the Harlem Globetrotters...?

"My brain is F&%cked, I can't fall asleep, let's f^**k it again by using drugs" - Yeah, this will work...
I'm not saying drugs don't work, but hey, your brain is your most valued ... whatever. Do you think messing with it even more will help you in the long run?
I agree, if you really want to solve the problem you have to actually be willing to 'do' something, not just take some pills. I have had trouble sleeping too, and in my experience the best solutions are yoga and/or meditation. Granted, this won't work at its full potential immediately- you need to do it for awhile and develop a routine. But the results are great.
Also, I don't want to sound like a dik or a prude, but I find all the pharm advice in this thread disturbing- especially since a lot of it is, at best, partially true. Even drugs that most people consider totally harmless like melatonin and diphenhydramine (benadryl and many other brands) are not safe for everyone, in evey situation. I would certainly disregard (and delete if I could) all the information about prescription drugs posted here. Some of them are extremely dangerous and are only to be used in special circumstances under close medical supervision. And as I said, their representation wasn't entirely accurate. Although you may have good intentions posting info like that, someone here could read that and mistake it for medical advice. After all, it isn't too dificult to find prescription drugs on the 'black market.'
I had your problem for many years... chronically... in my case, it had to due with numerous factors (shift work and stress being the 2 major ones). I now try to do one soothing thing before going to bed (listen to soft classical or *shudder* my wife's new age music or take a very hot shower) and then I go to bed. If I feel relaxed, I turn off the light and try to let my mind wander to non-specific and not important things (DO NOT THINK ABOUT SCHOOL, WORK, LISTS, etc). Even if I do not fall asleep, I will keep my eyes open and relaxed and not concern myself with the fact that I am not sleeping. If I'm not at all tired, I bring something that is boring to read... not homework or work type reading... just long, non-pertinent to my life type of reading... this usually shuts my brain down...
I now manage to nod off within 30 minutes of going to bed now 3/4s of the time... quite a contrast from when I could easily stay awake the whole night (7 plus hours) without even feeling drousy... until it was getting close to time to start my day, of course....
Things to avoid in the last 3 hours or so before bed: caffeine, visual brain stimulants that are not associated with physical release activity, stress inducers
Things to do: drink water and start to let your mind wander....on "water fountain" type stuff....

you could always try the Kennedy Family secret Recipie. Vallium, Lunista, and Alchol, just make sure you dont have to go to "a Vote" or drive a woman home from some where, but if you must watch out for bridges.
perfectly simple imho - exercise. Tire your body, you will not only be able to sleep but you will get all those chemicals your body produces naturally. You will be more focused and you overall energy levels will increase. I started playing soccer 5's once a week at lunchtime @ work. I felt great the rest of the day got through a lot of engineering analysis and reports, slept early got up early, re-juvinated and ready for work again. my performance/ enthusiasm increase due to excersise.
drugs are for mugs m8

Also make sure that your bedroom is completely dark. If light is coming in through the blinds then try hanging something over the window so that the light doesn't come through. If you have a stereo, tv, computer, or anything that has a little led light that stays or flashes on during the night then either unplug it, or cover it with a piece of tape. You get the general idea. I find that the darker the room is, the better you can fall asleep.

Life is not measured by how many breaths you take, but by how many times your breath is taken away.
Sleep is a rather complicated behavior and as with most behavior, changing it is not usually accomplished by a simple remedy. The Sleep Foundation has an excellent set of suggestions to promote healthy sleep. Many sleep problems can be treated with behavioral interventions.
However, I believe there is room for drug intervention under proper medical care. Most hypnotic drugs do not promote a normal night's sleep (although there is a new drug that affects meletonin receptors and is touted as providing "normal" sleep). This is why medical professionals suggest that they be used sparingly. However, they can be helpful adjuncts to behavioral interventions.
Part of our problem is the fact that we try to function on less sleep than we probably need. We do this with the "help" of stimulants, which make the shorter sleep time even less efficient.
Hot tea. Celestial Seasons has one called "Sleepytime Extra". It hits you with chamomille, then zonks you with valerian root. This stuff works good. Put some honey it in to sweeten it up. It really works.
