I've ridden several 100 thousand miles on motorcycles. All but about maybe 50 wearing a helmet. Some of those naked midnight runs are quite memorable. To me its mostly a comfort thing, I never liked windshields or goggles. There have been some pretty big rocks and a couple of birds bounce off my head. If the above list of injuries are correct then a helmet may not of helped much. Most don't protect the nose or jaw.
I use to think 35 was old, but with every passing year 65 looks younger and younger.

A full face helmet like my $450.00 Schuberth most certainly have prevented most if not all of his facial injuries. About everyone I know now uses full face helmets. Course I do not hang out with the H-D crowd.
