putting my own views to the side but where would America be without its history of open arms to immigration. Its the fundamental beginning of the country more than any where else on this planet.
The difference of what is legal and illegal can change in a day. So think back....if you adopted what I am sure are now rigorous conditions/ requirements would many of you be there today.
Its all a grey area over here in the UK aswell.

The worst part about this whole deal, is educational visas.
People from other countries, get these educational visas, learn a college-level trade; engineering, medicine, whatever... and then are sent home afterward to enrich the country they came from.
THEY should stay here and the uneducated ones should be forced out

There are other cities going similar actions, at least until the ACLU provides constitutional protections and civil liberties to those that aren't Americans...
Facism is ugly, isn't it?

If they really are not worried about legal immigrants, then why make the offical language? That looks like racism, talks like racism, and walks like racism.

It is also far more economical than having to produce documentation for every governmental service in any/every known language.
A help line that has staff to speak in mandarin, chilean, swahili, hindu, and possibly venusean, or face descrimination lawsuits. "You provide services only for english, spanish, german, dutch, french, appalachian, and italian speakers??? where is my equal access?"
Edit: did I forget, valley girl, klingon, pig latin, carney, binary and l33t

State lawmakers are offering more than 500 bills this year targeting state-mandated services, illegal aliens and the employers who hire them, responding to a growing chorus of public opinion nationwide calling for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.
Led by Georgia, where benefits for illegal aliens were cut and stiff sanctions placed on employers who hire illegals, and by Colorado, which banned nonemergency services to those in the country illegally, at least 39 states have either proposed or passed similar legislation.
Lawmakers have focused on constituency concerns regarding an estimated 10 million to 12 million illegal aliens now in the country, resulting in rising costs for education and medical care, higher crime rates and exploitation by employers.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) -- Nearly a year after the city of Hazleton began a high-profile campaign to rid itself of illegal immigrants, opponents of the crackdown are getting their day in court.
A trial opening Monday pits Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, who says illegal immigrants are destroying the quality of life in his small northeastern Pennsylvania city, against the ACLU and Hispanic groups who contend that the laws are unconstitutional.
It will be the first federal trial in the nation to explore whether local governments may act on their own to curb illegal immigration.
Dozens of cities and towns around the country have followed Hazleton's lead, approving laws ranging from penalizing companies that employ illegal immigrants to making English the official language of local government.
Hazleton's Illegal Immigration Relief Act would impose fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and deny business permits to companies that employ them. A companion measure requires tenants to register with City Hall.
U.S. District Judge James Munley, who will preside over the non-jury trial, barred enforcement of the laws pending the outcome of the case. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
The Hazleton laws were prompted by a number of high-profile crimes involving illegal immigrants. Two illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic were charged in May 2006 with shooting and killing a 29-year-old man, and a 14-year-old boy was arrested for firing a gun at a playground.
In court papers, Hazleton said illegal immigrants have committed at least 47 crimes since last spring, consuming much of the city's police overtime budget. Illegal immigrants were the subject of one-third of all drug arrests in 2005, and they have driven up the costs of health care and education, the city said.
Cesar Perales, president of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, said at a news conference Sunday in Hazleton that most Latinos are in town legally, noting that Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
The ordinance turns neighbor against neighbor, Perales said, because residents who suspect someone is an illegal immigrant can report them to city officials.
"People feel harassed and hassled by this ordinance," he said.

It is good to see that this wasn't done last year for a press release, but that they actually intend to defend and enforce this

And those Americans speaking other than English as a first language? Either as immigrants or as natively-born?

Good. If they need more workers, they will pay more to get them. The cost increase to my gallon of OJ will not come close to my tax money spent on services to illegals
Actually, it will exceed the net tax revenues spent on services to illegals. Many illegals have taxes paid into the Social Security system and never take anything out of it. And they demand far less pay than petulant undereducated young Americans who will be taking up the slack.

THEY include many of the 9/11 hijackers. And we do already import much of our highly-educated workforce.

Not racism, not nationalism, it's xenophobia. Agree with the Val, Klingon, etc. languages; they were created, and not to communicate as much as to obscure. And how could you forget The Cant?
My idea for the language problem (and as long as there are so many, it is a problem) is not to declare English as the official language, but as the standard language. That is, the system should set up in English first (the greatest number of Americans speak English, and this concept is quite democratic). Laws, traffic signs, school books, etc. should start in English, but as quickly and accurately as possible should be translated to other applicable languages. And I do think it is worth it to translate into relatively obscure languages, even if it's not particularly a good economic investment (not to say break the bank to accommodate that one Cantonese couple in your entire city). It's always good for a democracy to communicate with its members.
by the way, this is politics
p.s. the first time I see an official traffic marker in l337, I will burn the motherf#$*g country down.
