Immigration reform... One city at a time

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060620/...ts_crackdown_4

Quote:
HAZLETON, Pa. - With tensions rising and its police department and municipal budget stretched thin, this small northeastern Pennsylvania city is about to begin what the mayor calls one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal immigrants in the United States.

"Illegal immigrants are destroying the city," said Mayor Lou Barletta, a Republican. "I don't want them here, period."

Last week Barletta introduced, and the City Council tentatively approved, a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants; and make English the city's official language.

...
There are other cities going similar actions, at least until the ACLU provides constitutional protections and civil liberties to those that aren't Americans...

poor guys... I hopefully have no desperate need to go live somewhere else because I'd starve in my own country... American inmigrants are threated more than ok here...

Still, criminals should be persecuted and punished to the last extent... Americans have good reasons to be pissed with the illegal inmigrants who are up to no good. But let's just don't make this thread fall into stuff like racism or such, that's just not right. And you like it or not, hispanic inmigrants play a very important role in the American Economy.

The issue as I see it is with those who attempt to come into the US in a manner that is contrary to our laws regarding immigration. I for one have no problem with people from somewhere else settling in America........PROVIDED they obey the entire process of law from beginning to end! Those who are trying to circumvent our system should be deported (yes I know, it would take some time, but we must control our borders or America may sometime all too soon cease to exist)! Border control is essential to stemming the tide of those who might seek to destroy this country....Border control alone will not be the whole answer, but we must do at least that much and do it both well and fairly!

True ... ideally we wouldn't have to :)

Although sometimes its pretty easy. For example the nice fellow that came from a country to our immediate south, was here in Denver for a few months, shot and killed an off duty police officer, and then fled back to that country.

I dont know what all the fuss is about it is pretty cut and dry. If you are illegal you are a criminal no matter if you are the nicest person in the world you are still illegal. If other countries dont agree then we will send them all to you and you can deal with them. Legal immigrants are welcomed illegals are not.

I don't really give much about the whole subject to be honest... but I can get in the shoes of that people and understand the reasons that drove them to inmigrate illegally to a country where they knew they were not going to be treated ok, leaving behind their family and all what they had... Not all illegals in the US or wherever go around killing people or selling drugs you know... And I dare to say not the majority does.

If I rob a gas station to feed my family, it is still a crime, and I am still a criminal. They may have come here for "legit reasons", but there are legit ways to get here. I don't like the idea of our neighbor is poor so we feed his kids. Especially when his kids number in the thousands and can eat alot!

I never said I approve illegal inmigration. I said I can understand it... I also understand your point.

Illegal inmigration is outside the American law. It's up to the American government to do whatever they want to come up with whatever solution they find convenient.

Saw the Hazleton article, earlier today, in the LOCAL news.

Not too far from Hazleton, know what they're talkin' 'bout.

Sorry but, seems some are pushin' the limit in Hazleton, PA. Makes it uncomfortable for all. Sorry again!

States try to block illegal workers
Immigration laws penalize employers
By Charisse Jones
USA TODAY

At least 30 states have passed laws or taken other steps this year to crack down on illegal immigrants, often making it harder for undocumented workers to find jobs or receive public services.

Acting while Congress struggles to set policy regarding the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, states have enacted at least 57 laws, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures and a USA TODAY analysis. Among major themes of the state legislation: fining businesses that hire undocumented workers and denying such companies public contracts if they don't verify the legal status of employees.

“The trends … have leaned toward the punitive side,” says Ann Morse, an immigration expert at the National Conference of State Legislatures. “The No. 1 topic has been employment in terms of deterring employers and employees.”

Examples:

...
A story just came out today that they harvest on Florida's orange crop will be extended as they are having issues in finding enough workers...

Good. If they need more workers, they will pay more to get them. The cost increase to my gallon of OJ will not come close to my tax money spent on services to illegals

Yup. Send 'em home. If they want to come back then they jolly well can just wait their turn in the immigration line like everybody else. This is not about race - this is about invasion. If Germany was located at our south border instead of Mexico then we should round up all illegal alien Germans and send 'em home.

The whole thing flies in the face of those that HAVE come here legally. My best friend's wife is from Mexico City. She went through the long process of becoming a U.S. Citizen and is welcome here on that basis and she knows it.
