Vote for dyson here. We have 2 giant breed (hairy) dogs and have tried almost every upright and cannister vac we could on the theory that they'll all die sometime and so we might as well get the <100 cleaner. One came close in that it was easy to break apart with one screw driver and clean out. But they all die....
Then we gave in and bought the dyson. Got a sweet deal at sears; The "Complete" package with a discount for memorial weekend and we wrangled another 10% for it being a floor model.
The interesting thing to know about Dysons. Dyson does not permit returns or refurbs to be sold by dyson distributors. (Sure you'll find em second hand on ebay but buying from a reputable store, you are getting new). Dyson will also pretty much rebuild the machine from scratch if it ever has a fault. And when it does they'll arrange pick up from your door. (have yet to test it, but that's what the warranty claims).
IT is however, very well built. incredible easy to maintain - no screw driver needed and I can totally strip and empty any dog hair that's stuck.. which I hasten to had has not happened once yet!
Um. I don't work for dyson btw, but they do rock. Expensive but with our 5 year warranty on it, we won't have to buy the usual 3-4 uprights we'll have to otherwise and it has pretty much paid for itself that way. And the cleaning power is amazing. It may have come out of nowhere, but don't doubt that it's worth it :)
From someone who hates to vacuum… After years of buying cheap vacuums, my husband finally convinced me it's worth it to spend more on a good vacuum. He was right. We got a ~$400 Electrolux from Lowes and it is great. Well-made, quiet, all attachments right at your fingertips (mine's a canister vac since we don't have any carpet), excellent filtering, easy-to-change bags. I still hate to vacuum, but since getting this one there is usually a lot less cursing involved.
I don't know about the dyson, Looked at them but really...... Same plastic crap as the others at twice the price. And the hose wand thing seems overly complicated. Seems like good theory of operation but many others have the same thing now. Dyson just comes out of nowhere and claims to be superior.
First of all Dyson developed this "good theory of operation" annd is suing the competition for taking his ideas. I bought one and I love it!
I personally avoid those with HEPA filters that have to be replaced periodically. They just seem to be a permanent drain on your pocketbook. The replacement filters are incredibly expensive and I have doubts about their effectiveness, for the money. You also run the risk of your vacuum becoming an orphan and not being able to find replacement filters.
we looked at dyson, but was dismayed at how it worked. had to be just right to suck up. we chose an Electrolx. we got ours at Lowes. This was about 3 months ago. So far, very happy with it. It was listed around $300 to $400 or so. Yes, it's an upright. I have heard a lot of good about dyson, but we didn't wan't to spend over $400.
We just went through this a while ago, and we couldnt afford a dyson, so we went with a Sears Kenmore, and I love it.. its the best vacuume I've had and it was only 99$ we just make sure we empty it after every 1 or 2 cleanings and the suction is great every time.
Plus it has an auto wind up cord! (On a standup vac!) .. woohoo. (Yes this was the primary reason i bought it! :-P )
We have a dyson complete and it is great. We bought it on sale and got extra discounts for using a sears card. We have a shedding machine (chow husky mix) and the dyson is awsome for pet hair!!!!
No matter what you get, it's very important that it really sucks. And to me, how clean the filtered air that comes out of it is equally important, if not more. Try to stick your nose to the exhaust when it's on and see how much you like your vacuum. If you sneeze at it, think about getting a better one. Also make sure it doesn't leak the air out where it's not supposed to.
