Off topic, I know, but this is sooo true. The true southern democrat cannot identify with the national party anymore. The party left them years ago on social values.

Environmentalists have got the health of the planet on the agenda. The others have money, money, money. There are alot of people who work for the well-being of others/the planet instead of selling themselves to the highest bidder. Not everyone is a greedy, selfish *********.

To say that this is like an ordinary argument is obviously wrong. One "side" makes money from polluting - The other "side" wants to put an end to excessive pollution and save animals and plants (we are all animals). Why should the "green" side lie? (Al Gore and your two-party systems aside.) There are healthier democracies that actually have realized that the "green side" is right in too many ways and has started to do something about it. Read about the Kyoto protocol.

We have ONE habitable planet. We simply must take care of it. It can't stand everything (neither can we animals).

Why exempt China and India from Kyoto? Absurd.

Quote:
Position of the United States
The United States of America (USA), although a signatory to the protocol, has neither ratified nor withdrawn from the protocol. The signature alone is mostly symbolic, as the protocol is non-binding over the United States unless ratified.

On July 25, 1997, before the Kyoto Protocol was finalized (although it had been fully negotiated, and a penultimate draft was finished), the U.S. Senate unanimously passed by a 95–0 vote the Byrd-Hagel Resolution (S. Res. 98)[3], which stated the sense of the Senate was that the United States should not be a signatory to any protocol that did not include binding targets and timetables for developing as well as industrialized nations or "would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States". On November 12, 1998, Vice President Al Gore symbolically signed the protocol. Both Gore and Senator Joseph Lieberman indicated that the protocol would not be acted upon in the Senate until there was participation by the developing nations CNN. The Clinton Administration never submitted the protocol to the Senate for ratification.

The Clinton Administration released an economic analysis in July 1998, prepared by the Council of Economic Advisors, which concluded that with emissions trading among the Annex B/Annex I countries, and participation of key developing countries in the "Clean Development Mechanism" — which grants the latter business-as-usual emissions rates through 2012 — the costs of implementing the Kyoto Protocol could be reduced as much as 60% from many estimates. Other economic analyses, however, prepared by the Congressional Budget Office and the Department of Energy Energy Information Administration (EIA), and others, demonstrated a potentially large decline in GDP from implementing the Protocol.

The current President, George W. Bush, has indicated that he does not intend to submit the treaty for ratification, not because he does not support the general idea, but because of the strain he believes the treaty would put on the economy; he emphasizes the uncertainties which he asserts are present in the climate change issue Corn, David (2001). Furthermore, he is not happy with the details of the treaty. For example, he does not support the split between Annex I countries and others. Bush said of the treaty:

This is a challenge that requires a 100% effort; ours, and the rest of the world's. The world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases is China. Yet, China was entirely exempted from the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. India and Germany are among the top emitters. Yet, India was also exempt from Kyoto … America's unwillingness to embrace a flawed treaty should not be read by our friends and allies as any abdication of responsibility. To the contrary, my administration is committed to a leadership role on the issue of climate change … Our approach must be consistent with the long-term goal of stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Andy ... most Europeans (58% in some poll if I recall) want to see the US weakened weakened economically and militarily, so I'm not totally surprised by your reply.

It wouldn't destroy your economy. :D
The ones that probably makes the most money will make a tiny bit less money.
The problem is that the ones that makes the most money are the ones that control your country, and they want their extra ferrari for the kids.

China is a more powerful country than the US, but quite poor. Noone messes with China except by diplomacy (and espionage). India is just plain poor.

LOL! George W. Bush... What a joke. He forced a mostly unecessary war on you, and noone complained, but the cost of doing something really good for everyone is too high. :D

I can make up statistics too.... I will if it makes you feel better.

It's not that I want the USA to be weakened. I'd just like you to do the right thing. I'd be happy if you lived up to your own publicity more of the time (land of the free.... home of the brave... truth justice and the American way) that sort of thing, rather than selfish xenophobic paranoia.

Not making up the stat ... just can't recall the poll right now. I wouldn't do that to you ... I respect your opinions.

In order for something like Kyoto to be effective, it must be fair globally. We are already at a huge disadvantage to emerging economies like China, not including them is economic disaster. Do you have any idea how much coal they are burning??

BTW - not a paranoia, just trying to look to a future where the America I love is what my kids can enjoy in the years to come.

The thing is though, by not signing up to it, and helping to drive the process, the USA (I nearly said you, but i realise you're not allowed to sign anything) has given the rest of the world the excuse not to sign it.

It wasn't the solution to the worlds problems by any means. Solving them will require changes to all of our lives. Personally I think they are worth making for the sake of my children and grand children........

Been flying Old Glory everyday since 9/11. Thought it should fly there as well!

Good for you RobMan! I put on a red, white 'n blue wrist band, "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS" at the beginning of the Iraq "stuff."

Wrist band kept wanting to slip off, secured with Gorilla Braid 40# test strength, fishing line.
It won't come off, stayin' put. :approve:
