Thanks, Grentz. You always provide very nicely formatted answers. (All the links, right there!)
I'm still looking to go MicroATX though. Those Media Center Cases are big! Why go big, when you can go small? (Yes yes, I know, heat will be a problem.)
I plan to not aim for a high power processor, there by saving money and heat. But, that will require better capture cards, and such. I much prefer that. Then I can upgrade as needed. Also, I'm looking to go seperate cards, graphics card and tuner. I can't go seperate units, capture card and VCR, as part of the idea is the unit can handle timer recordings. Not something that can happen with the VCR. (VCR has to be on the right channel and cannot be changed with out some IR hack or such. Not fun.)
But that's my setup thoughts, more info appreaciated.

If you are interested in only capturing tv and burning it, have you considered buying a computer with media center already installed? I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop with media center and I can capture and burn DVDs. The Qosmio does produce a lot of heat. I have my laptop sitting on a cooling fan.
Another option is to purchase a standalone DVD recorder. I have a LiteOn dvd recorder that operates like a VCR. You can set it for 1hr; 2hr; 3hr; 4hr or 6hr quality. You can set the timer to come on and go off. Just some suggestions if you want to buy something already together instead of acquiring all the pieces.
Since i obtained my LiteOn, I seldom capture tv on the laptop.
That's about where I'm targetting, 2(.6)Ghz and 1GB memory. Thanks for the warning.
... you know. a simple water cooling sulution might be just what you need. maybe something like ::
waterblock--> resivor--> radiator-->

Right, your Lite-On PVR is much like my (rebranded from Lite-On) iLo PVR. Good stuff, except for the coastering of CDs. I'm looking to upgrade from the iLo, though, with something that can stream internet feeds and such, while doing what the iLo can do.

ATI all in wonder tuners are not crap, they are very good and much better than about 95% of the tuners out there. There are some avermedia and hauppage ones that are better though.
Note that the tuner itself is more or less equal with most cards. What really matters is the DSP, which does most of the work decoding the signal into data packets. DSPs with heatsinks are usually faster, but not always. (Older DSPs run from 3.3v or 2.5v, while the newer ones run from 1.8v.)
A good GPU can indeed make a good DSP, but will significantly decrease graphics performance. From what I've heard, a 9700 or above will still perform well when it's being used as a DSP. However, I do not really recommend the AIWs, as upgrading the card means replacing a tuner that performs about as well as the new one. (I wonder why they couldn't put connectors for the tuner, A/D, and control logic on the video card. Then buy a tuner module and plug it into the video card. Then it can be kept when upgrading a video card and still takes up one slot.)

I can answer your question, Star! If it ain't broke, make them pay more when upgrading! Instead of just updating one little part for somewhat cheap, make them pay more for an all-in-one package.

Also, everyone is big into watercooling and i can say from experience its not that great. My machine is quieter without watercooling. Most watercooling systems still use large fans that are noisy. The ultra silent water cooling setups are fanless that require a lot more money (bigger rads (radiators)) and take up a ton of space. You are best with a good processor fan and it should be no problem even in a small case.....

I have not had any problems with creating coasters since I decided on using only name brand dvds. I understand what you are doing is more than just capturing tv off the cable. Good luck in your adventure.

Speaking of, what do people suggest for fast boot? A boot that takes 5 minutes is NOT going to work, any OS, software, etc. good to solve this issue?
Use standby mode, in which case it can turn back on in just a few seconds. Or just leave it on. (Just leaving it on will make features like scheduled recording and remote access easier to set up. A modern media center PC will use little power anyways.)

Yeah, my friend at IBM watercooled his home PC... He says it's worse then a fish tank, having to clean the water and all that. No fun.
What about oil cooling using mineral oil?
